He is not Goku turned evil: the familiar Saiyan body belongs to Goku, but the mind, motives and identity belong to Zamasu. In the Dragon Ball Super manga’s Future Trunks arc, Black’s alliance with a second, timeline-specific Zamasu leads to their Zero Mortal Project and, eventually, their Potara fusion.
Who is Goku Black?
Goku Black is the name Zamasu adopts after taking control of Goku’s body in another timeline. Zamasu is an apprentice Supreme Kai of Universe 10. With Goku’s appearance and Saiyan body, he becomes a powerful attacker—but he is not a clone, and he is not the original Goku possessed by an outside force. The official Goku Black character feature and Zamasu profile describe the body theft and the different timeline origins behind the story.
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Who is Black? | Zamasu, a Kai apprentice from another timeline. |
| Whose body does he use? | Goku’s Saiyan body. |
| Is he Goku’s evil personality? | No. Black’s identity and ideology are Zamasu’s, not Goku’s. |
Is Goku Black actually Goku?
No. The distinction is between body and person: Black looks like Goku because Zamasu took over Goku’s body, but Goku’s personality and choices are not what drive Black. Goku acts from his own character; Black acts on Zamasu’s conviction that mortals are a mistake and are unworthy of ruling their universe. Zamasu frames their destruction as justice, though it is a radical and murderous interpretation of that idea.
What is Goku Black’s plan?
After killing his former master Gowasu and taking the Ring of Time, Zamasu travels to the future timeline where Future Trunks lives. Black attacks Trunks and the remaining mortals. Trunks escapes to the past to seek help, bringing Goku and Vegeta into the conflict. These events are recounted in the official manga-focused Goku Black feature.

The Zero Mortal Project
Black’s campaign is part of the Zero Mortal Project, carried out with another Zamasu. This ally is not simply Black at a different point in his life: he is the Zamasu from Future Trunks’ timeline. One Zamasu has stolen Goku’s body and become Black; the other is a timeline counterpart who joins his cause. The official Future Trunks arc manga recap distinguishes the versions and summarizes their partnership.
Why does Goku Black have pink hair?
Black’s pink-haired form is Super Saiyan Rosé. In the manga character feature, Future Zamasu heals Black’s battle injuries, and the recovery triggers the Saiyan cells in Goku’s body to power up. The official explanation connects Rosé to the unusual combination of a Saiyan body and a divine spirit; it is described as surpassing Super Saiyan God. The color is therefore not just a cosmetic variation: the form reflects Black’s mixed nature as Zamasu in Goku’s body.

How does Goku Black become Fusion Zamasu?
When Black and Future Zamasu face defeat, they use the Potara earrings to fuse into Fusion Zamasu. That fusion brings together the body-stealing Zamasu and the Zamasu from Trunks’ timeline; it does not erase the distinction between their origins in the events leading up to their union.
What happens to Future Trunks? Spoilers
In the official manga recap’s account, Zeno erases Zamasu and all of Trunks’ future timeline. Trunks survives, but loses his home and travels to a different future timeline in the hope of helping create a peaceful world. The recap describes this outcome as part of the manga’s “Future” Trunks Arc.
