Dragon Ball DAIMA’s Ending Is a Fitting Last Note on Akira Toriyama’s Vision

DAIMA’s final image gives the Demon Realm adventure a plain, deliberate goodbye without declaring Dragon Ball itself over.

Spoilers for Dragon Ball DAIMA, especially episode 20. DAIMA ends not by closing every door in Dragon Ball, but with a hand-drawn image of Goku and the word “Oshimai”—“The End.” That plain sign-off gives the Demon Realm adventure a clear finish while leaving the wider franchise free to continue. It is a fitting last note on Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball vision, though not proof that every detail of the finale was his personal choice.

What happens at the end of Dragon Ball DAIMA?

DAIMA’s final episode, episode 20, aired in Japan on February 28, 2025. The official franchise announcement had previewed the climax as a fight against Gomah after he acquired the Evil Third Eye and became Third Eye Gomah; it also described Goku and his companions joining allies, including Tamagami Number One, against him. That announcement was a pre-finale setup, not a full account of episode 20. Dragon Ball Official Site

For the final image, ORICON NEWS reports that the episode showed a hand-drawn illustration of Goku beside “Oshimai,” translated as “The End.” It is a simple sign-off rather than a franchise-wide declaration that no more Dragon Ball stories can follow. The episode’s Japanese broadcast date also fell just before the March 1 anniversary of Toriyama’s death, but no source cited here establishes that the scheduling was intended as a memorial. Why “Oshimai” makes the ending feel complete

A clear goodbye to this adventure

The word “Oshimai” does something a sequel hook cannot: it gives the story a final punctuation mark. DAIMA begins with Goku and his companions shrunk through a conspiracy and drawn into the Demon Realm, a premise built around entering an unfamiliar world. Its last image turns away from another mystery or looming threat and simply says the adventure is over. Dragon Ball DAIMA Official Site

Closure without shutting down Dragon Ball

That distinction matters. An ending can complete the journey it has told without declaring the entire fictional universe finished. DAIMA’s sign-off marks the end of this story, while the familiar image of Goku leaves the character and world recognizable rather than sealed away. The result preserves the series’ capacity for play and further possibility; it does not promise a continuation or claim that one is impossible.

How DAIMA reflects Toriyama’s Dragon Ball vision

The strongest basis for connecting DAIMA to Toriyama is his credited role, not speculation about his intentions for each shot. The official DAIMA site credits him with original work, story, and character design, and Toei’s launch release described the series as a new story and characters from Toriyama. Those credits establish substantial creative authorship. They do not prove that Toriyama personally dictated every production decision or the finale’s final cut. Seen in that light, the ending’s fit is less about a grand final statement than about scale and tone: a new-world adventure reaches its end, but Dragon Ball remains open to surprise. Reading the unadorned “Oshimai” as an especially apt final note on Toriyama’s vision is an interpretation, not an official explanation of why the image was chosen.

Does the finale’s production history change that reading?

It adds context, but not a definitive explanation. In an October 2025 report, ComicBook.com attributed remarks to executive producer Akio Iyoku from Japanese Blu-ray commentary: production began before the story was complete, scripts for episode 10 onward arrived during production, and staff repeatedly reconsidered the finale’s sequence and content. The account suggests an iterative process; it does not establish why any individual plot choice was made or prove that the ending’s simplicity was planned from the outset. ComicBook.com

For physical viewing, the Japanese official product page lists Blu-ray boxes and a DVD box released July 2, 2025. The Blu-ray editions cover all 20 episodes and include audio commentary for episodes 1, 2, and 20; the limited Blu-ray edition also includes additional physical extras. The page does not establish availability, language, region compatibility, price, or stock in other countries, so confirm those details with the retailer before buying.
