Super Saiyan is Goku’s most consequential form for the story. Its awakening in the fight with Frieza is an emotional turning point, and it becomes the reference point for later Super Saiyan transformations. This is a ranking of narrative impact—not a claim about which form has the greatest power.
How this ranking measures impact
The ranking weighs what each form changes in the story, how distinctive its idea and debut are, and how much it continues to shape Dragon Ball. Those factors do not produce an objective score: different anime and manga versions sometimes handle events differently, and the official sources discussed here do not provide comparable numerical power values.
“All” here means the major forms and power states supported by the official material discussed below, not every temporary boost or variation. Some entries are transformations; Kaio-ken is a technique, while Ultra Instinct is described as a combat state or technique. Their inclusion reflects their importance to conversations about Goku’s forms, not a claim that they all work the same way.
Goku’s forms, ranked by story impact
1. Super Saiyan
Goku’s transformation in the Frieza conflict is the strongest choice for the top spot because it is both a character moment and a major shift in the story. The Dragon Ball Official Site’s 2022 feature, “The Many Forms of Super Saiyan! Dragon Ball Legends Saiyan Selection – Goku,” describes Goku awakening as the legendary Super Saiyan through intense anger during his battle with Frieza. Later Super Saiyan stages build on the transformation, giving it a lasting place in the series’ storytelling.

The franchise chronology also lists the 1991 film Super Saiyan, Son Goku. That date establishes an early franchise milestone; it is not evidence of a popularity ranking.
2. Ultra Instinct: Sign, perfected, and refined developments
Ultra Instinct stands apart from the familiar sequence of Saiyan transformations because its defining idea is that the body reacts automatically in combat. The Dragon Ball Official Site’s 2022 recap of the Dragon Ball Super manga places Goku’s first major use in the Tournament of Power and describes later perfected and refined developments in the fights with Moro and during the Granolah story.
Sign is an incomplete stage that Goku cannot maintain for long, according to the official site’s 2022 form feature. Treat Sign, perfected Ultra Instinct, and later refinements as stages or developments of the same broader concept—not as forms the cited source declares wholly unrelated. Ultra Instinct ranks this high because it gives Goku a different kind of combat progression, rather than simply adding another step to the Super Saiyan ladder.

3. Super Saiyan God
Super Saiyan God brings Goku into a new scale of conflict: he learns about the form from Shenron and transforms to face Beerus. But the official Dragon Ball Super manga recap makes clear that even powered-up Goku cannot withstand Beerus’ might in that encounter. The form’s impact comes from opening the door to god-level stakes, not from making Goku the strongest fighter in the scene.
4. Super Saiyan 4 (Dragon Ball GT)
The GT version of Super Saiyan 4 has a distinctive concept: it draws on Great Ape power while giving Goku a visibly different appearance and demeanor. The Dragon Ball Official Site’s 2022 feature places the form in Dragon Ball GT’s Shadow Dragon Saga and describes its connection to that Great Ape power.
This entry refers specifically to GT’s Super Saiyan 4. Official Dragon Ball materials also identify a separate DAIMA-specific Super Saiyan 4 Goku: the site’s 2026 announcement for an S.H.Figuarts figure labels the character “-DAIMA-.” The materials cited here do not settle how the two versions relate in continuity, so they should not be treated as interchangeable.

5. Super Saiyan 3
Super Saiyan 3 is a dramatic escalation, recognizable by its waist-length hair and lack of eyebrows. The official site’s 2022 form feature highlights those visual traits. Its later use also keeps it in view: a 2025 official announcement about Dragon Ball DAIMA’s climax confirms that Goku uses Super Saiyan 3 against Third Eye Gomah.
That memorable look and return give the form a strong place in the transformation roster. The official recaps cited here, however, support a less singular transformation-specific plot role than they do for Super Saiyan or Ultra Instinct.

6. Super Saiyan Blue Kaioken
Blue Kaioken combines Super Saiyan Blue with the Kaio-ken technique. The official site’s 2022 form feature describes the visual contrast of a red aura over Blue. Its impact is the spectacle and tension of layering a technique onto an existing god-powered form; the sources cited here do not establish a numerical multiplier for the combination.

7. Super Saiyan Blue (Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan)
Official Dragon Ball material also calls this form Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan: it is attainable when a Super Saiyan God goes Super Saiyan. The site’s 2022 form feature and 2022 Dragon Ball Super manga recap place it after Goku and Vegeta’s training with Whis.
Blue establishes a new god-powered level for Goku, but, in a story-impact ranking, it is less of a turning point than the original Super Saiyan God transformation. Its name can be confusing: Blue is not another name for Super Saiyan God itself.
8. Super Saiyan 2
Super Saiyan 2 belongs in an account of Goku’s recognized Super Saiyan progression, but the official sources cited here do not give a focused account of his debut in the form or explain its individual role relative to his other transformations. Its lower position is therefore an editorial judgment about the evidence and this ranking’s impact criteria—not a claim that the form is unimportant to Dragon Ball overall.

9. Great Ape (Oozaru)
Great Ape, also called Oozaru, is a foundational Saiyan power state and an important part of the concept behind GT’s Super Saiyan 4. The official site’s 2022 feature directly supports that connection. The sources cited here do not provide a detailed account of Goku’s early Great Ape appearances, so this ranking does not assign those events a larger story role than the evidence establishes.
10. Kaio-ken
Kaio-ken is a technique-based power-up, not a Super Saiyan transformation: it does not belong to the hair-color progression. Its relevance to this list includes its later pairing with Super Saiyan Blue, described by the official site’s 2022 form feature. The sources cited here do not establish numerical multipliers for Kaio-ken, so none are assigned.

Story impact and combat strength are different questions. A form can be a major narrative turning point without making Goku stronger than the opponent he faces; the official recap of the Beerus encounter makes that distinction clear for Super Saiyan God. Nor do the official sources cited here supply comparable numerical power values that would justify a strongest-to-weakest ranking. This list ranks consequence, concept, debut, and continued narrative relevance instead.
