BioWare game director Corinne Busche said the player-created Qunari in Dragon Age: The Veilguard were shaped by the demands of a highly flexible character creator—and by BioWare’s decision to continue the player-Qunari style used in Dragon Age: Inquisition. She was speaking specifically about player-created characters, not every Qunari depiction in the game.
What did the developer say?
In a December 4, 2024, Dragon Age Day developer AMA, a player asked why the player Qunari looked different from the Antaam and compared them with Qunari from earlier games. Busche’s answer addressed both the design constraints and the series comparison:
“First let me say that when you have a character creator with the breadth of sliders and options for both head and body, that does create some constraints that you need to work within. We felt this was ultimately a good trade-off for the player, to ensure they could get the full range of face and body sliders that the other lineages were afforded. Also, we viewed the player-created Qunari as a continuation of the style of player-created Qunari in Dragon Age: Inquisition, which in both games, differ from some of the other forms of Qunari we’ve seen.”
The archived AMA transcript identifies Busche as game director. Her explanation was not that every Qunari model had to look alike: she explicitly separated the player-created version from other forms of Qunari in the series.

Why did character customization affect the design?
Busche said a creator offering extensive head and body sliders imposes constraints on the designs that can work within it. BioWare considered those constraints a worthwhile trade-off because it wanted Qunari players to have the same broad face and body customization range afforded to the other lineages.
The context helps explain the choice. In a June 27, 2024 preview, Game Informer described four playable lineages—elves, Qunari, humans and dwarves—and extensive face and body controls. It reported more than 40 horn types and materials, as well as separate pronoun selection and different body types. Those details come from a contemporary preview, not a technical specification or a post-release audit of the creator.

How does this relate to Qunari in Inquisition?
Busche said BioWare viewed the player-created Qunari in The Veilguard as a continuation of the player-created Qunari style in Inquisition. She also noted that player characters in both games differ from some other Qunari forms shown in the series. That distinction is central to her defense: comparing a customizable protagonist directly with the Antaam or another established depiction may overlook that BioWare treated them as different visual categories.
Her answer gives the studio’s rationale, but it does not claim that the designs are identical across the two games or that every viewer would find them successful. Nor does it say customization constraints were the only consideration behind the art direction.

What prompted the criticism?
On September 4, 2024, ComicBook.com published an opinion piece titled “Dragon Age Has Ruined the Design of the Qunari,” criticizing the revealed player-created Qunari and comparing them unfavorably with earlier games. That article establishes that the criticism was published; it is not a survey of players or evidence of a universal reaction. Whether the player-character design works is ultimately an aesthetic judgment, while Busche’s response explains the practical and continuity considerations behind it.
