Dr. Stone has no official intelligence leaderboard, so this ranking is an editorial comparison—not canon. It weighs scientific and technical knowledge, original problem-solving, strategy, social judgment, practical expertise, and adaptability. Those strengths do not all measure the same thing, and the order reflects overall impact across them rather than an IQ-like score.
Manga spoiler warning: This series-wide list includes characters introduced later in the manga. Anime-only readers may encounter spoilers below.

How this ranking works
Senku is the clearest benchmark for scientific knowledge: the official character profile describes him as exceptionally intelligent, knowledgeable, and curious. But scientific expertise is only one kind of intelligence. The ranking also considers how characters solve unfamiliar problems, plan under pressure, read people, apply specialist skills, and adapt or collaborate. Characters with fewer documented examples in the available official profiles are ranked cautiously; the official character index establishes who is in the cast, not how smart each person is.
The premise makes applied knowledge central: Senku uses science to rebuild civilization after humanity is petrified, as the official anime introduction explains. That favors scientific and technical capability, while leaving room for other kinds of problem-solving.

The 10 smartest characters in Dr. Stone
1. Senku Ishigami
Senku takes the top spot because scientific knowledge, curiosity, and applied problem-solving are the series’ defining intellectual strengths—and he is the character most directly associated with all three. The official profile describes him as a science-minded boy with extraordinary intelligence, extensive knowledge, and strong curiosity. His position here rests on that explicit characterization and his central role in using science to rebuild civilization, not on a claimed numerical measure.
2. Dr. Xeno
Xeno is Senku’s closest rival in the ranking because he represents high-level scientific expertise in a series where science changes what characters can accomplish. His place reflects the story’s presentation of him as a major scientific counterpart to Senku. The official character index confirms that he belongs to the cast, but it does not publish an intelligence score or settle who is more capable; the second-place choice is an editorial judgment.
Rank #2
3. Chrome
Chrome earns a high place for the value of curiosity and learning in a world where formal scientific education has been lost. He is an important candidate for inventive, practical problem-solving rather than a rival to Senku on accumulated scientific knowledge. His placement recognizes that ability to investigate and build understanding is itself a form of intelligence.
4. Gen Asagiri
Gen’s strongest case is social intelligence: reading people, communicating persuasively, and adjusting to changing circumstances. Those skills can shift what a group believes or chooses, even when they do not produce a scientific invention. His high position reflects the breadth of intelligence the ranking counts, not a claim that he surpasses the leading scientists technically.

Rank #3
5. Ryusui Nanami
Ryusui represents strategic and practical expertise. In a reconstruction story, understanding how to organize people and pursue ambitious goals matters alongside knowing how a device works. He ranks below the most science-centered characters because this list gives substantial weight to original scientific problem-solving, but his broader leadership and domain strengths place him among the strongest minds.
6. Sai
Sai is a later-series candidate included in a manga-wide ranking. His inclusion recognizes the importance of specialized knowledge to the story’s later challenges. The official character index includes him, but does not itself establish a comparative feat or rank; this placement is an editorial assessment, and readers seeking anime-only coverage should stop before the later-manga entries.
Rank #4
7. Tsukasa Shishio
Tsukasa’s intelligence is strategic and interpersonal rather than primarily scientific. His official profile describes him as calm and intelligent as well as physically powerful. The relevant distinction is that physical strength alone does not make him smart; his place here reflects judgment, planning, and leadership under pressure.
8. Ukyo Saionji
Ukyo is a credible candidate for practical expertise and situational awareness. This ranking treats specialized ability as a real intellectual strength, while placing it below the broader scientific, strategic, or social influence represented by those above him. The official index lists him among the cast but does not provide an official intelligence assessment.

9. Chelsea
Chelsea appears in the later-series cast and belongs in a ranking that covers the full manga rather than only early anime characters. Her inclusion reflects the breadth of specialist and adaptive intelligence represented across the story. The official character index establishes her as a character, not a fixed position in any intelligence hierarchy.
10. Suika
Suika rounds out the list for adaptability and the value of observation and persistence. She is also a useful example of why intelligence should not be reduced to scientific credentials or adult expertise. Her place is an editorial judgment based on the wider dimensions used here; it is not supported by an official ranking.

VIZ Media’s 2021 character popularity poll put Senku first, Gen second, Chrome third, Suika fourth, Kohaku fifth, Ryusui sixth, Tsukasa seventh, Ukyo eighth, Dr. Xeno ninth, and Taiju tenth. That order reports reader popularity, not measured intelligence. It can show which characters attracted fan interest in that poll, but it cannot validate the ranking above or be treated as a scientific statistic. VIZ’s published poll results are dated October 1, 2021.
