Snoop says Dre scrutinized his words, delivery, music and song concepts; that account gives the album’s title-review argument—Dre brings out the best in him—a specific basis, while leaving room to judge the results track by track.
What did Dr. Dre do on Missionary?
Dre produced Missionary, but Snoop describes his role as more hands-on than simply supplying beats. In a December 13, 2024 announcement, Universal Music Canada quoted Snoop saying: “He brings the best out of me because he’s particular about everything I say, the way I deliver it, the fuckin’ music and the concept of the songs.” Universal Music Canada’s announcement also quotes Dre saying Snoop had placed his career and legacy in Dre’s hands, and that he wanted to nurture and present them the right way.
The Associated Press reported Snoop saying Dre would help write material and guide how he said it, down to enunciation and punctuation. Snoop called him “a real (expletive) producer, director,” as quoted by the Associated Press. That is Snoop’s description of the process, not an independently measured claim about the album’s quality.
How does that direction shape the album?
The album’s presentation sets up a return to the Snoop-and-Dre partnership while giving Snoop room to carry most of the vocals. Apple Music notes that the two share verses on “Outta Da Blue.” Its editorial descriptions call “Hard Knocks” martial in its drumwork, “The Negotiator” a hard-hitting, G-funk-inflected closer, and “Gunz N Smoke” a slow, funky reunion with 50 Cent and Eminem. Those are the platform’s critical characterizations, rather than production credits. Apple Music’s album listing

Snoop also singled out the emotional work behind “Now or Never.” The AP reports that he described the song as a “tears of joy” record dedicated to loved ones who had died, and credited Dre’s influence with enhancing it. That example makes the producer’s direction more than a matter of polishing a familiar rap persona: by Snoop’s account, it helped him shape a personal subject into a song.
Rolling Stone Australia reviewer Will Dukes heard Snoop’s bars as “wry, crisp, and wicked” and framed the album as a celebration of the rapper’s strengths and growth. The review was not an unqualified endorsement: Dukes found “Gunz N Smoke” underwhelming. The headline’s claim is therefore best understood as a critical reading of how Dre’s guidance serves Snoop, not a promise that every track lands equally well. Rolling Stone Australia’s review

Is Missionary a sequel to Doggystyle?
The title nods to Doggystyle, Snoop’s 1993 debut, but the available descriptions do not establish Missionary as a narrative or musical sequel. Apple Music presents it instead as the pair’s first full-length team-up in more than three decades. The connection is a reunion and a title reference, not evidence that the new album continues the earlier record’s story. Apple Music
