Google can remove a result from Search without deleting the original page; people-search sites require their own opt-out requests, and information may return.
What counts as doxxing for Google removal?
Google describes doxxing as sharing private information to harm someone. Under its doxxing removal policy, a page may qualify when it contains personal information alongside explicit or implicit threats or calls for harm or harassment, or when it exposes a significant amount of aggregated personal information without a legitimate purpose. Google reviews the specific URLs submitted; a report is a request for review, not a guarantee of removal.
Google Search Help’s “Remove my private info from Google Search” explains the policy and its limits. Google may also keep results it considers valuable to the public, including some government and newspaper pages.
What should you do first?
- Save the URLs and relevant evidence. Record each exact page address and note what information appears there and, if relevant, the threatening context. Keep only what is needed to make reports. Avoid reposting the exposed details, which can spread them further.
- Report qualifying pages to Google. Submit the specific URLs through Google’s personal-information or doxxing reporting process. Describe the information on each page and explain the threatening context or aggregation where it applies. Google evaluates requests individually.
- Check “Results about you.” Use Google’s Results about you process to find results containing your contact information, submit them for review, and monitor request status. Google Search Help’s “Find and remove personal info in Google Search results” describes this process.
- Contact the site hosting the material. Where appropriate, ask the website or platform to remove the content itself. Google controls its Search results, not the page hosted elsewhere.
- Address immediate danger separately. If you face an immediate threat, seek help from emergency services appropriate to your location. For a specific legal question, consult a qualified local professional; the legal rules and available options depend on the circumstances and jurisdiction.
What does Google removal actually change?
There are two distinct outcomes: a search engine may stop showing a qualifying URL in its results, or the site hosting the material may delete or change the page. A Google Search removal can reduce discoverability through Google, but it does not itself erase the original post. Contacting the site owner is a separate route, and neither route guarantees that information will disappear everywhere online.

How do you remove information from people-search sites?
People-search sites compile profiles from sources that can include data brokers, public social profiles, and government public records. Find your profile on each site and follow that site’s opt-out procedure. The process is site by site, and individual procedures can change.
An opt-out may stop a site from selling information it already holds, but it does not remove public records or necessarily remove details that appear in reports about relatives or associates. Information can reappear, so check again periodically.

The Federal Trade Commission’s July 2022 guidance, “What To Know About People Search Sites That Sell Your Information,” discusses both free opt-outs and paid assistance. Its guidance is useful for comparing approaches, but specific people-search site practices may have changed since publication.

A federal case illustrates why intent and circumstances matter, but it does not establish that every doxxing incident is prosecuted under the same law. In a May 6, 2026 release, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of North Carolina announced a guilty plea in a case involving publication of a Supreme Court Justice’s home address with intent to threaten, intimidate, or incite violence. The release said the charge carried a statutory maximum of five years in prison and that sentencing would be determined under the Sentencing Guidelines and statutory factors. Those details describe that case, not a general legal rule; the release alone does not establish any later sentencing outcome. U.S. Attorney Russ Ferguson said, “Doxxing is dangerous. It exposes officials to all sorts of people that may cause harm, and that harm may be even worse than the doxxer expected or intended.”
