Spoilers for relationships and later family storylines. Matthew Crawley is a distant cousin of Robert Crawley, the Earl of Grantham—not one of Robert and Cora’s three daughters. Matthew becomes Robert’s heir, while Mary, Edith and Sybil are Robert and Cora’s children. Keeping the family relationship separate from the inheritance explains why Matthew’s arrival changes the future of Downton Abbey.

How is Matthew related to Lord Grantham?
Matthew is a distant cousin of Robert Crawley. The official episode descriptions establish his cousin relationship and his position as heir, but do not specify an exact cousin degree. It is therefore more accurate to call him Robert’s distant cousin than to assign him a precise place on a numbered family tree.

Matthew belongs to a separate branch from Robert and Cora’s household. He arrives with his mother, Isobel, rather than as one of the earl’s children. His marriage to Mary later connects the two branches by marriage: PBS Masterpiece identifies Matthew and Mary’s wedding as the occasion in the opening episode of series 3. Why does Matthew become Robert’s heir instead of Mary?
The story distinguishes family closeness from succession. Mary is Robert and Cora’s daughter, but Matthew is named as the heir in the effort to save Downton. PBS Masterpiece’s description of series 1, episode 2 says that accepting Matthew as heir is the price of saving the estate, and notes Mary’s concern about her inheritance. So Matthew’s status does not mean he is Robert’s son or that Mary is not his daughter. His place in the succession is a plot point tied to Downton’s future; his biological connection is that of a distant cousin.

The series begins in April 1912, after the sinking of the Titanic, and introduces Matthew and Isobel in its second episode, according to ITV’s series page. The succession question leads into Matthew’s relationship with Mary, whose wedding is the focus of the opening episode of series 3.

Later stories extend beyond the three daughters’ childhood household. ITV’s series 5, episode 6 listing places the story in 1924 and describes Edith receiving terrible news and making a consequential decision. ITV, series 5, episode 6 A later episode description from PBS mentions Edith, the child in the Drewes’ care and Sybbie, but those summaries are not a complete descendant genealogy.
