The older cast comparison ranks Maggie Smith highest among seven prominent Downton Abbey actors, at an estimated $16 million. That is not a verified account of her wealth: Celebrity Net Worth later put Smith’s estimated net worth at $21 million at the time of her death. These figures come from different publications and dates, so the ranking below is best read as a dated comparison of estimates—not a definitive measure of the cast’s finances.
Cast net worth estimates, ranked
GOBankingRates published the following comparison around 2015. It says the estimates came from Celebrity Net Worth except where noted; Laura Carmichael’s figure is attributed to Taddlr.com. The list covers seven prominent cast members, not everyone who appeared in the series.

Why Maggie Smith’s estimate differs
Celebrity Net Worth’s later page gives Maggie Smith an estimated net worth of $21 million at the time of her death, rather than the $16 million attributed to it in the older GOBankingRates comparison. The two figures should not be blended or treated as a settled value: they are estimates published at different times, and neither source supplies a comparable audit of her assets and liabilities. Celebrity Net Worth says its figures are estimates unless otherwise indicated, drawing on public sources and, where provided, private tips and feedback. Its Maggie Smith page does not present the $21 million figure as an audited estate or probate value.

What these rankings can—and cannot—show
A net-worth estimate is not the same thing as a disclosed financial statement. The reviewed comparisons do not establish cast salaries per episode, royalties, investments, private assets, or total liabilities on a common basis. Nor does the agreement on a figure prove it independently: GOBankingRates lists Michelle Dockery at $4 million, and Celebrity Net Worth’s individual page gives the same estimate, but that is agreement between estimate publishers, not confirmation from financial records. Celebrity Net Worth identifies Dockery with Lady Mary Crawley/Talbot and labels its figures as estimates.
The franchise’s commercial success is a separate measure. In a September 2025 report about Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, the Associated Press said the first two feature films grossed more than $287 million worldwide. That is box-office revenue, not income paid to any individual actor or a measure of personal net worth. Hugh Bonneville, who played Lord Grantham, recalled the show’s uncertain beginnings: “None of us knew it was going to be a success.” Series creator Julian Fellowes said, “It’s been a huge chunk of my life. And when I die, I think it’ll probably be the only job anyone remembers. But I hope it’s been happy.” The Associated Press report also identifies the 2019 and 2022 films as predecessors to the 2025 finale.
