Down Cemetery Road is an eight-episode Apple TV mystery thriller whose appeal rests on an unlikely partnership: Emma Thompson’s private investigator Zoë Boehm and Ruth Wilson’s increasingly determined Sarah Trafford. Its mystery begins with a house explosion and a missing girl in an Oxford suburb, then widens into a conspiracy. The series takes time to connect those events, giving its two leads and their uneasy alliance room to shape the investigation.
What is Down Cemetery Road about?
After a house explodes in an Oxford suburb and a girl disappears, Sarah Trafford (Ruth Wilson), a neighbor drawn into the case, becomes determined to find her. She turns to Zoë Boehm (Emma Thompson), a private investigator. Their search brings them into a conspiracy involving people believed to be dead.
The setup moves from a local tragedy toward a larger mystery, but the two women remain the story’s anchor. Sarah’s personal investment and Zoë’s investigative role give the case two distinct points of entry: one driven by a need to find the missing girl, the other by the work of pursuing leads.
How does the mystery’s pacing work?
The series is structured as an eight-episode investigation rather than a single puzzle solved at once. The opening incident establishes the immediate questions—the explosion and the girl’s disappearance—while the conspiracy emerges as the search develops. That gradual widening makes the show a better fit for viewers who enjoy following clues and changing stakes over time than for anyone seeking a brisk, self-contained mystery.

The pace also gives the partnership time to develop alongside the case. Sarah and Zoë are not introduced as a ready-made detective team; their different relationships to the mystery provide the tension that carries the investigation forward. The trade-off is that the story asks for patience as it connects its local starting point to the larger conspiracy.
Do Emma Thompson and Ruth Wilson make a convincing investigative pair?
Thompson plays Zoë Boehm, the private investigator at the center of the case, while Wilson plays Sarah Trafford, the neighbor whose determination sets the search in motion. The contrast in their roles gives the partnership its shape: Zoë approaches the mystery as an investigation, while Sarah is personally consumed by finding the missing girl.
The series’ central question is not only what happened, but how these two women will work together as the answers grow more complicated. Their pairing gives the plot a character-led counterweight to its conspiracy elements, making the relationship between investigator and reluctant ally as important to the viewing experience as the next clue.
Is Down Cemetery Road based on a book?
Yes. The series adapts Mick Herron’s novel of the same name, part of his Zoë Boehm book series. The novel is the direct next step for viewers who want to explore the source story in print; the screen version is credited to writer and executive producer Morwenna Banks, with Natalie Bailey as lead director for season one.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Will there be a season 2?
Yes. Apple announced a second season on December 12, 2025. The announcement says the next season will involve a new mystery concerning black-market antiquities, but it does not give a release date. Apple also reported that the series had achieved a Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and relayed praise for it; the announcement supplied neither a score nor a review count, so that wording should not be read as a quantified critical consensus.
Thompson, who is also an executive producer, welcomed the renewal, calling Zoë “a punkishly delicious avatar” and saying she was thrilled to work with the team again. It is an enthusiastic response from a star and producer, rather than an independent assessment of the show.
