Doula: A True Crime is a three-part documentary about Kaitlyn Braun, a Brantford woman whose case involved false claims of pregnancy and stillbirth to obtain doula services. Writer and director Nathalie Bibeau’s series asks why the events happened, going beyond the basic account of what took place. CHCH links the documentary to CBC Gem; check the service for current availability and scheduling.
What the documentary covers
CHCH describes Doula: A True Crime as a three-part series written and directed by Nathalie Bibeau. Its stated focus is the question of why Braun made the false claims, rather than only recounting the events. That framing is the broadcaster’s description; it should not be taken to mean the documentary establishes a definitive explanation for her actions.

The case concerns claims of pregnancy and stillbirth used to obtain support from doulas. Doulas provide guidance and support around labour; Global News reported that such support can be provided virtually or in person. The sources cited here do not establish doulas as medical-care providers.
How the legal timeline developed
Early coverage described allegations and charges, not a final court outcome. In March 2023, Global News reported that police alleged Braun had sought doula services under false pretenses between June 2022 and February 2023. A Brantford police spokesperson said investigators believed at least nine doulas had been affected and that more people might not have reported. Those figures describe the investigation as reported at the time.

The Doula Association of Alberta’s March 2023 statement, updated in September 2023, listed the charges then reported: 10 counts of criminal harassment, 12 of false pretenses, four of fraud, three of sexual assault and three of indecent acts. These are historical charge counts, not the final disposition.
CHCH later reported that Braun pleaded guilty to 21 charges in December 2023. In a separate report dated September 24, 2026, the broadcaster said she had resigned from the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers under a professional-regulatory agreement requiring $5,000 to be paid within five years. The guilty plea and regulatory outcome give the later context that the initial 2023 reports could not.
