Doug Ingle Jr. paid tribute to his father, writing, “Thank you Dad for being a father, teacher and friend. Cherished loving memories I will carry the rest of my days moving forward in this journey of life.” The Guardian reproduced the tribute in its May 27, 2024 obituary.
Ingle’s role in Iron Butterfly
Born in Nebraska and raised in San Diego, Ingle formed Iron Butterfly in 1966. He was a founding member, singer and organist, and wrote the band’s signature song, “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida.” Atlantic released the group’s debut album, Heavy, in 1968.

How “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida” became the band’s signature
Iron Butterfly released the album In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida later in 1968. Its title track runs about 17 minutes in the album version and occupies the record’s second half. A shorter radio edit reached No. 30 on the singles chart, according to The Guardian.
The song’s title is commonly explained as a slurred version of “in the garden of Eden,” reportedly spoken by an inebriated Ingle. That is a reported origin story, not a verified recording-session transcript.

The album’s chart and sales legacy
Accounts give different figures for the album’s success, reflecting distinct measures and scopes. The Guardian reported that it spent 140 weeks on the U.S. album chart and sold more than four million copies in the United States. The New York Times obituary reported a No. 4 peak on the Billboard album chart and said the album was said to have sold some 30 million copies worldwide. The U.S. sales figure and the qualified worldwide estimate should not be treated as interchangeable.
