What happens at the end of Don’t Move?
As Iris begins to regain movement in the rowboat, she turns Richard’s hunting knife and gun against him. The boat is damaged and sinks; Iris struggles to shore, and Richard makes it to land too, gravely wounded and bleeding. Iris looks at him, says “Thank you,” and walks away.
The ending explainer published by Netflix Tudum on October 25, 2024 describes Richard as bleeding out, but does not separately confirm that he dies. It establishes that Iris survives and leaves him behind, not a definitive post-scene account of his fate. Why does Iris thank Richard at the end of Don’t Move?
The phrase echoes Richard’s story about Chloe. He tells Iris that “Thank you” were his last words to Chloe, who died in a car accident. In his account, the loss and accident brought him a sense of clarity about himself and led him to discover a violent part of his nature. Iris repeats the words after fighting the man who used that story to manipulate her.

That echo gives Iris the final word. What Richard presented as a defining phrase in his own story becomes Iris’s way of confronting him and reclaiming agency. But the line is not simply a sarcastic jab: it also reflects that the struggle has made her fight for her life.
Two meanings of Iris’s “Thank you”

What the cast and filmmakers say the moment means
Kelsey Asbille, who plays Iris, describes the change as a choice to live rather than merely endure: “I believe there is a moment when Iris chooses to live, not just survive.” Raimi offers the clearest expression of the line’s sincere meaning: “I believe the line in the finest sense of it: ‘Thank you for inspiring me to live again,’ ”
That interpretation does not mean Iris is grateful for Richard’s crimes or that her grief has vanished. The ending supports a narrower, more powerful change: after losing her son and reaching a breaking point, Iris has found a reason to fight for her own life. Her pain is not erased; her desire to live has returned.

How much of Richard’s story about Chloe should viewers believe?
The film leaves uncertainty around Richard’s account. The directors caution viewers against treating it as wholly reliable, although Adam Schindler says there are “glimmers of truth” in it. Finn Wittrock, who plays Richard, says he performed the story as if Richard believed it. Those comments describe the filmmakers’ and actor’s approach to the character; they do not independently verify what happened to Chloe.
Why Iris’s survival matters beyond the final line
Before the lake confrontation, Iris is grieving her young son and has reached a breaking point. Richard approaches her at the cliff where her son died, appears to dissuade her from suicide, then reveals himself as a serial killer, paralyzes and kidnaps her. Her struggle is not an instant cure for grief; it is the ordeal through which she begins to choose life again.

The Tudum explainer reports that the paralytic takes about 20 minutes to set in and about an hour to wear off. Those are details reported about the film’s events, not independently verified medical timings. As Iris’s control fades and returns, she has to act within a narrow window—and by the final scene she has turned Richard’s weapons against him.
