Nintendo lists moves including Ground Pound, Roll, Blow, and Grab and Cling, alongside obstacles such as vines and barrel blasts. The trailer presents the game’s broad action rather than a separate story from the original Wii adventure.
What the Switch version includes
Nintendo describes the Switch game as a visually enhanced version of the Wii platformer, with additional levels from the Nintendo 3DS release. The result is a package drawing on both earlier versions rather than a new, unrelated Donkey Kong story.

The Switch game also lets players choose how they want to approach difficulty: keep the design as first made for Wii, or reduce difficulty to receive extra hearts and other items. Nintendo’s description does not characterize either option as a specific difficulty rating.
Can you play Donkey Kong Country Returns HD in co-op?
Yes. Nintendo lists two-player local co-op. Diddy Kong can use the Peanut Popgun and Barrel Jet, while Dixie Kong has Helicopter Spin. The game is described as local play; the later Switch 2 GameShare feature is a separate option for local wireless play.
Release date, formats, and supported systems
Nintendo UK lists the game’s release date as January 16, 2025, with a physical Nintendo Switch Game Card edition and a download version. Its UK listing gives a 12.1 GB download size and PEGI 3 rating. These are UK listing details, not necessarily specifications for every region.
Nintendo’s US page identifies Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 as supported systems. The game has also received post-launch additions, so the current feature set is broader than the launch version.

What the 2026 update adds
Nintendo Support lists version 1.1.0 as released January 20, 2026. The update adds Dixie Kong as a playable character and Turbo Attack, a high-speed course mode, as well as Brazilian Portuguese support, issue fixes, and image-quality improvements on Switch and Switch 2.

Nintendo’s US game page also describes the free update as bringing enhanced visual effects and Turbo Attack to both systems. GameShare lets a Switch 2 player share local wireless play with a friend who does not own the game.
Is there a Donkey Kong Country Returns HD demo?
Yes. Nintendo says the free Nintendo eShop demo contains three levels from the first world of DK Island. It offers a chance to try a sample before deciding whether to get the full game.
