Washington’s June 14, 2025, parade marked the U.S. Army’s 250th anniversary—and took place on Donald Trump’s 79th birthday. Late-night hosts Jimmy Kimmel and Stephen Colbert turned that coincidence and the parade’s apparent turnout into material for jokes, while the official event framing remained the Army anniversary.
What the parade was—and why it was called a birthday parade
The parade took place in Washington, D.C., on June 14, 2025, as a celebration of the U.S. Army’s 250th anniversary. The White House described it as a celebration of the Army’s 250th birthday, and the official transcript of Trump’s remarks also framed the occasion around the Army anniversary. Trump said, “Every other country celebrates their victories. It’s about time America did too.” White House announcement · Official transcript of the remarks

The birthday framing also came from the date: Trump turned 79 on June 14. The coincidence made the parade a natural target for late-night jokes, but it does not change the event’s official purpose. Associated Press preview, May 21, 2025
What was expected for cost and attendance?
Before the event, the Associated Press reported that the Army estimated the celebration would cost $25 million to $45 million and expected attendance of up to 200,000. Both figures were pre-event estimates: the attendance number was not a final count, and the cost range was not an audited final total. Associated Press preview, May 21, 2025

#1 Best Overall
In its post-event report, the AP said attendance appeared below the high end of the Army’s expectation. That account does not establish a definitive final crowd count, so the shortfall should not be converted into a precise attendance figure. Associated Press report, June 14, 2025

Jimmy Kimmel focused on the birthday coincidence and turnout
TV Insider reported that Jimmy Kimmel addressed the parade in his June 16 monologue, including its low turnout. His jokes played on the event’s overlap with Trump’s birthday while recognizing that the parade marked the Army’s anniversary. TV Insider’s report on Kimmel, June 17, 2025

Stephen Colbert turned the grass into a punchline
The Wrap reported that Stephen Colbert joked about the parade’s sparse turnout and said, “MAGA stands for Make America Grass Again.” The line was a satirical jab, not a measured description or an official count of attendance. The Wrap’s report on Colbert, June 16, 2025
These are documented examples of late-night reaction, not evidence that every host or show covered the parade. Their shared comic premise was the contrast between an event projected to draw a very large crowd and post-event coverage describing attendance as below the high-end expectation.
