Donald Trump said he had not seen the online claim that he was dead when a reporter asked him about it during a live Oval Office event on September 2, 2025. He called the rumor “sort of crazy” and linked the speculation to two days without news conferences, according to PolitiFact’s account of the exchange.
What Trump said when asked about the rumor
The exchange took place during an event about moving U.S. Space Command headquarters from Colorado to Alabama. Fox News reporter Peter Doocy asked, “How did you find out over the weekend that you were dead?”
Trump replied: “I didn’t see that. I have heard. It’s sort of crazy, but last week I did numerous news conferences. All successful, they went very well. Like this is going very well. And then I didn’t do any for two days and they said ‘There must be something wrong with him.’” The remarks are reproduced in PolitiFact’s same-day report.
How the rumor spread
PolitiFact traced part of the online speculation to an August 28, 2025, USA Today interview with Vice President JD Vance. Asked about his readiness to assume the presidency, Vance first said he was confident Trump was “in good shape” and would serve out his term. He then discussed what he would do if a terrible tragedy occurred.

Online users circulated the hypothetical portion as suspicious, even though it followed Vance’s positive remarks about Trump’s health. PolitiFact also cited the president’s low-profile Labor Day weekend, lack of scheduled public events and broader online speculation about his health.
“I feel very confident the president of the United States is in good shape, is going to serve out the remainder of his term and do great things for the American people. And if, God forbid, there’s a terrible tragedy, I can’t think of better on-the-job training than what I’ve gotten over the last 200 days.”

What the social-media count does—and does not—show
PolitiFact reported that Rolli IQ counted at least 5,616 occurrences of the phrase “Trump is dead” across X, Reddit, YouTube and Bluesky between August 28 and September 2, 2025. That is a count of phrase occurrences reported by a social-media monitoring tool—not a verified count of unique people, or of people who believed the claim. The volume of posts is not evidence that the claim was true.

Keep the September 2025 event separate from later claims
The Oval Office exchange documented by PolitiFact happened on September 2, 2025. A separate claim dated September 3, 2026, was addressed by Lead Stories; it is a different episode and should not be conflated with the 2025 exchange. The recorded remarks and contemporaneous reporting establish what Trump said in response to the question, not the truth of later health rumors.
