President Donald Trump said he had not seen the reported boos directed at Vice President JD Vance during the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics opening ceremony, then called them “surprising” and noted that Vance was in a foreign country. The Associated Press reported cheers for Team USA’s athletes and boos and whistles when Vance and Second Lady Usha Vance appeared on stadium screens.
What happened when JD Vance appeared at the ceremony?
The incident took place in Milan on February 6, 2026, during the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics opening ceremony. Vance and Usha Vance attended as leaders of the U.S. presidential delegation; the White House had announced Vance’s assignment on January 17, 2026, in a statement archived by the American Presidency Project.
The Associated Press reported that spectators cheered as the American athletes entered as Team USA, then booed and whistled when the Vances appeared on screens in the stadium. AP also reported jeers when Israel’s delegation entered. The accounts distinguish the reception for the U.S. athletes from the reaction reported during the vice president’s appearance; they do not establish why individual spectators reacted that way. (Associated Press, February 6, 2026.)
What did Trump say about the reported boos?
Asked about the incident on February 7, Trump first said he had not seen or known about it. CNN’s rush transcript records his response, including its apparent disfluency: “I didn’t see it. I don’t know. I didn’t that. Is that true? Is that right?” After the reporter confirmed it was true, Trump said: “That’s surprising because people like him. Well, I mean, he is in a foreign country. You know, in all fairness. But he doesn’t get booed in this country.” (CNN Newsroom transcript, February 7, 2026.)

In the exchange, Trump expressed surprise and pointed to Vance being abroad. He did not identify a motive for the crowd’s reaction.
How did Olympic officials describe the crowd’s response?
IOC spokesperson Mark Adams urged fair play at sporting events. He also said having a good relationship with the U.S. administration was good news for the IOC. Milano-Cortina 2026 chief executive Andrea Varnier said he heard “an incredible cheering” when the U.S. team entered and “didn’t hear anything else,” adding that he had read about the other reaction in the papers. Varnier’s account describes what he said he heard; it differs from AP’s report of boos and whistles during the Vances’ appearance. The statements should be read as separate accounts, not as a jointly established explanation of what everyone in the stadium heard.

The Guardian reported a difference between the broadcasts: CBC’s Canadian coverage carried the boos, while NBC’s U.S. broadcast neither included nor remarked on them when Vance appeared. That is the Guardian’s account of the broadcast contrast; it does not establish why the audio differed. (The Guardian, February 6, 2026.)
