Donald Trump criticized George Clooney after the actor discussed press freedom on CBS’s 60 Minutes on March 23, 2025. Trump called the segment a “total puff piece” and described Clooney as a “second-rate movie star” and “failed political pundit,” according to contemporaneous reporting. Those were Trump’s characterizations, not established facts.
What happened after Clooney’s interview?
CBS published the interview on March 23, 2025. Clooney was promoting his Broadway debut in Good Night, and Good Luck, a production about CBS journalist Edward R. Murrow. The conversation also turned to journalism and the press’s role in holding government to account. (CBS News, March 23, 2025)
The following day, The Guardian reported that Trump responded on Truth Social, dismissing the interview as a “total puff piece” and directing personal insults at Clooney. The original post was not directly available in the reporting reviewed here, so the wording is attributed to The Guardian’s account. (The Guardian, March 24, 2025)
What did Clooney say about press freedom?
Clooney connected the Murrow story to the responsibility of journalism in a democracy. In CBS’s transcript, he said: “When the other three estates fail, when the judiciary and the executive and the legislative branches fail us, the fourth estate has to succeed.” (CBS News transcript, March 23, 2025)

He also spoke about government pressure on journalists. The transcript records his words, including their pauses, as: “We’re seeing this idea of using government to scare or fine or use corporations — to make– journalists smaller. Governments don’t like– the freedom of the press. They never have.”
Why was Clooney on 60 Minutes?
The interview had two related subjects: Clooney’s Broadway debut and his concerns about press freedom. Good Night, and Good Luck tells the story of Edward R. Murrow, the CBS journalist known for challenging political pressure. Clooney used that historical subject to discuss the press’s role and the pressures journalists can face. What did Trump’s response target?
Trump’s reported response challenged the interview’s framing by calling it a “total puff piece,” then attacked Clooney personally with the labels “second-rate movie star” and “failed political pundit.” The distinction matters: Clooney was discussing press freedom and Murrow; Trump’s reported post characterized the segment and its guest. The insults are opinions attributed to Trump, not neutral descriptions. (The Guardian)
