Donald Sutherland, the Canadian actor whose screen work ranged from the antiwar comedy M*A*S*H* to the Hunger Games films, died on June 20, 2024, at age 88. His son Kiefer confirmed his death. A photo retrospective traces the contrasts that defined Sutherland’s career: counterculture wit, unsettling drama and roles that reached new generations of viewers.
Early images: the offbeat presence of M*A*S*H* and Kelly’s Heroes
In photographs from Sutherland’s earlier screen career, his expressive face and unorthodox presence hint at the quality that made him difficult to confine to one type of role. The Associated Press identifies Hawkeye Pierce in M*A*S*H* as one of his defining parts. The film’s irreverent antiwar comedy made Sutherland’s performance a memorable counterpoint to the military setting.
Another image from this period can evoke a very different kind of wartime story: Kelly’s Heroes, in which Sutherland played a hippie tank commander. The role pushed his counterculture persona into an unlikely setting, showing how readily he could bring comic eccentricity to a large-scale film.
From comedy to unease: Animal House and Don’t Look Now
Sutherland’s range was not just a matter of moving between decades. He could shift between tones that seemed worlds apart. In Animal House, he played a stoned professor, another comic turn that the Associated Press cites among his notable roles. In Don’t Look Now, the photo retrospective’s selection points toward a more unsettling register, part of the dramatic work that made his career more than a sequence of eccentric characters.

Photos can capture a face, a costume or a moment on set; they cannot, by themselves, tell the full story of a performance. For individual images, dates, locations, co-stars and credits should be taken from their verified captions rather than inferred from what a photograph appears to show.
Later recognition, and a reach across generations
For a later generation of viewers, Sutherland was familiar from The Hunger Games, a franchise far removed in style from the films that first established his screen persona. The Guardian’s retrospective includes the series among the varied work through which it remembers him.
His career also encompassed dramatic roles in Revolution, A Dry White Season, Trust and The Undoing, as noted in the Guardian’s obituary. In 2017, Sutherland received an honorary Oscar, a major recognition late in a career marked by strikingly different kinds of work.

The Associated Press quoted Kiefer Sutherland describing his father as “one of the most important actors in the history of film” and “Never daunted by a role, good, bad or ugly.” That tribute fits the range visible across a photo remembrance: Sutherland could be wry, unnerving, absurd or imposing without settling into one screen identity.
