These performances are a representative selection, not a ranking; his career spanned more than six decades and included more than 140 film credits, according to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
What was Donald Sutherland best known for?
Sutherland was a Canadian actor whose work crossed film and television. His breakthrough came as Vernon Pinkley in the ensemble war film The Dirty Dozen (1967); M*A*S*H* (1970) then helped make him widely recognizable. Across the roles below, he moved from irreverent comedy and anti-authoritarian characters to psychological suspense, intimate family drama and a major late-career franchise.
Roles that show his range
Hawkeye Pierce in M*A*S*H* (1970)
As Captain Benjamin Franklin “Hawkeye” Pierce, Sutherland brought sardonic humor and rebellious energy to Robert Altman’s antiwar comedy. The Associated Press identifies Hawkeye as one of his signature offbeat characters. This is the 1970 film role; the long-running television adaptation featured a different actor as Hawkeye.
John Klute in Klute (1971)
In Alan J. Pakula’s tense thriller, Sutherland plays John Klute, a private detective searching for a missing man. The role shows his quieter screen presence: he observes and listens rather than dominating every scene. The Academy and Golden Globes profiles include Klute among his notable work.

John Baxter in Don’t Look Now (1973)
In Nicolas Roeg’s unsettling film, Sutherland plays John Baxter, an art restorer grieving the death of his daughter. The British Film Institute’s obituary highlights his performance as a bereaved father. It is among his most psychologically intense roles, built around grief, uncertainty and a man struggling to trust what he sees.
Calvin Jarrett in Ordinary People (1980)
Sutherland plays Calvin Jarrett, a father trying to hold his family together after a tragedy in Robert Redford’s family drama. The Academy describes this as one of Sutherland’s acclaimed leading roles. Its restrained performance gives the character’s care and helplessness room to register without turning either into a speech.
President Coriolanus Snow in The Hunger Games films (2012–2015)
As President Snow, Sutherland became a chilling face of authoritarian power for a new generation of viewers. The British Film Institute describes the franchise as introducing his work to a new generation; the Associated Press also names Snow among his familiar later roles. The part contrasts sharply with the irreverence of Hawkeye, while making use of Sutherland’s controlled, imposing screen presence.
Other notable films
Those five roles are not a complete filmography. Other films that help map Sutherland’s career include Kelly’s Heroes (1970), the science-fiction thriller Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978), Bernardo Bertolucci’s 1900 (1976), and Oliver Stone’s political drama JFK (1991). The Academy identifies The Dirty Dozen as his breakthrough; these titles, along with Klute and Ordinary People, also appear in institutional profiles of his work.

A career beyond these signature roles
The Academy’s profile credits Sutherland with more than 140 films across six decades. His screen career also included television, and the Television Academy records his Emmy recognition, including for Citizen X. His son Kiefer Sutherland praised him in a family tribute reported by the Associated Press after his death: “I personally think one of the most important actors in the history of film.” That is a son’s expression of admiration, not an award-body ranking.
