New Zealand creator Dominique McShain-Suson, known online as Dominique McShain, died in April 2025 at 21, according to People and the New Zealand Herald. She had publicly described having incurable colorectal cancer that had spread to her liver, and used her social media accounts to talk about her experience and encourage awareness of symptoms.

Who was Dominique McShain-Suson?

McShain-Suson was a Dunedin native who studied psychology at the University of Canterbury, the New Zealand Herald reported. She married Sean Suson in July 2024. People reported that she had more than 200,000 followers across major social platforms in 2025; that figure was reported by the outlet and is not an independently audited count.

What she shared about her diagnosis

According to the Herald’s April 24, 2025 account, McShain-Suson was 20 when she was diagnosed in 2024. The outlet reported that she experienced extreme fatigue, followed by blood in her stools, alternating constipation and diarrhoea, abdominal pain and loss of appetite. Its report says tests led to emergency imaging, which found large liver tumours, and a biopsy confirmed cancer. These are details from the Herald’s reporting, not independently reviewed medical records.

In May 2024, McShain shared that she had incurable colorectal cancer that had spread to her liver. People reported that she said doctors had told her she might have one to five years to live. The Herald reported that she described learning the cancer was incurable as devastating. “Being told you have cancer was different because I was almost like, ‘Okay, I’ll beat it.’ But once I got the incurable diagnosis, that was devastating,” she said, as quoted by the Herald.

Her final updates

In an April 2025 update, McShain wrote that her prognosis had changed to “only a few days to a few weeks to live,” People reported. The outlet said she described her liver as failing rapidly and said she had moved to end-of-life care focused on pain relief and managing side effects. She also wrote that she could no longer receive treatment, including chemotherapy she had received for seven months during the previous year. These details were reported from her post.

People reported that her final Instagram update included words for her husband, family and friends. The Herald said her final TikTok update was posted on April 11, 2025. People quoted her reflection: “My life may be short but I genuinely think I’ve squeezed every bit out of it.”

Why she spoke publicly about symptoms

McShain-Suson said she wanted to raise awareness of colorectal cancer among younger adults and encourage people to pay attention to possible symptoms, People and the Herald reported. The Herald quoted her saying, “Everyone always seems to be guaranteed a future, and processing that you might not get that is really hard.”

Her public account was a personal appeal to notice and discuss symptoms, not a substitute for medical advice. Her experience alone does not establish screening recommendations or show how common colorectal cancer is among younger people.
