The project follows the Parton and Owens families’ musical heritage, with Dolly’s cousin Richie Owens producing and relatives spanning generations performing alongside her.
What is Smoky Mountain DNA?
Dolly Parton & Family: Smoky Mountain DNA – Family, Faith & Fables is a family-centered album and heritage project, not a new 2026 release. Its official materials frame the story around Dolly’s paternal Parton family and maternal Owens family, tracing their roots from the United Kingdom in the 1600s to their present home in East Tennessee. That is the project’s account of its lineage, rather than independent verification of every genealogical claim.
In the original announcement, Parton said, “I am honored to spotlight our families’ musical legacy that is my Smoky Mountain DNA.” The album brings together immediate and extended relatives, including current performers and archival family voices. Richie Owens, Dolly’s cousin, produced the record.
When was the album released?
Dolly Parton’s official website announced the album with Owepar Entertainment and set its release for November 15, 2024. OwePar’s release notice on that date said it was available in physical and digital formats. The timeline matters: the initial announcement established the project and date; an October 29, 2024 update added the full track listing and noted two songs already released; the November 15 notice marked the album’s release.

What is on the 37-track album?
The official October 29 track listing contains 37 entries, beginning with “Introduction / My Tennessee Mountain Home (Instrumental)” and ending with “Outro / Smoky Mountain DNA (Instrumental).” It credits performers and songwriters across the extended family, including Dolly Parton, Stella Parton, Richie Owens, Jada Star and Heidi Parton, as well as younger generations. The complete lineup and writing credits appear in Dolly Parton’s official October 29 update.
Two songs released before the album
The October update identified “The Orchard,” performed by Jada Star and Dolly Parton, and “Tell Me That You Love Me,” performed by Richie Owens and Dolly Parton, as songs already released. Dolly wrote the title track specifically for the project.

A broad family-music palette
The Associated Press described the record as ranging across country, folk, hymns, bluegrass, R&B, swamp pop and rock; this is the AP’s characterization, not a formal genre label from the label. The AP also noted that “Puppy Love” revisits a song Parton first recorded at age 13. Speaking to the AP, Parton said, “I would imagine this will be my favorite album.”
How were archival family voices included?
The album incorporates recordings of deceased relatives alongside present-day performances. Richie Owens told the AP that restoration technology made it possible to build new music tracks around earlier vocal recordings: “With the technology that’s been available, we were able to achieve wonderful, miraculous situations where we were able to go in and build new music tracks” from those voices. That process helps connect generations within the project without suggesting that every track uses archival material.

What formats were announced?
At release, the announced formats were vinyl, CD, digital download and streaming. OwePar’s November 15, 2024 release notice described an “Appalachian Autumn” colored-vinyl pressing limited to 3,363 copies. That is a historical pressing figure, not confirmation that the edition remains in stock or is currently for sale; current prices, sellers and streaming-service listings are not established by the release notices.

The original announcement also described a four-part companion docuseries in production, with interviews and concert performances filmed at Knoxville’s Bijou Theatre. An October 2024 update said it was planned for 2025. Those announcements establish the plan, but do not verify whether the series was ultimately released.
