Dolly Parton has expressed interest in joining a new 9 to 5, but no final cast has been announced in the reporting available here. Lily Tomlin’s June 2024 remark that she felt “sort of” rejected was about her attachment to playing Violet Newstead—not a categorical rejection of the people developing the reimagining.
What is the new 9 to 5 project?
The original 9 to 5, released in 1980, starred Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin as colleagues who take revenge on a sexist boss. The newer project is a separate reimagining, not a confirmed sequel starring the original trio.

In April 2024, reports said Jennifer Aniston’s Echo Films was producing the reimagining for 20th Century Studios, with Diablo Cody writing. At that point, the project was described as in development and no cast had been announced. Those reports establish the project’s then-known setup, not its present production status.
Will Dolly Parton be in the 9 to 5 remake?
Parton has expressed interest in being involved, but that is not confirmation that she has joined the cast. The reporting cited here does not establish a final cast or production start, so it would be premature to describe her participation as settled.

Why did Lily Tomlin say she felt rejected?
In a People interview quoted by The Independent on June 3, 2024, Tomlin said: “I felt sort of the same way I felt about the musical. You know, part of you feels rejected.” She explained the feeling through her connection to Violet: “You think that character’s yours always. And you could reembody it.”
Her comment describes the emotional effect of seeing a character she had made her own potentially reimagined by someone else. The same account says she expressed sympathy for Aniston and Cody and called Cody a good writer. In May 2024, Tomlin had also said she was excited that someone else was working on a new take, while Fonda responded to the announcement with, “Good luck to them.” Together, those remarks suggest a mixed, personal reaction rather than a simple denunciation of the new team.

How is this different from the original trio’s sequel attempt?
The original stars had pursued their own follow-up, a separate effort from Aniston’s reimagining. Tomlin said an earlier draft did not work for them because it did not make the present-day workplace recognizable: “The draft just didn’t work for us. We couldn’t really see the work world today [in the pages]. People work from home. They take gig work. They don’t even know their boss. They’re at home!”
In a February 2025 interview excerpt, Fonda said the three had tried to develop a remake for some time but “were never able to find the right script.” She argued that a new story should reflect changed working arrangements rather than reproduce the original beat for beat. On the distance between workers and managers, she said: “They probably would never even meet their boss or know who their boss is.”

When will the 9 to 5 remake come out?
No confirmed release date is established by the reporting cited here. In September 2025, Aniston was quoted as saying the film would not be in theaters “for a while.” That is a general timing comment, not a release schedule; the cited reports also do not confirm a production start or final cast.
