Dolly Parton and Walmart announced a combined $12 million in Hurricane Helene relief commitments on October 4, 2024. The total combines Parton’s $1 million personal donation to Mountain Ways Foundation, a separate $1 million match pledged by her East Tennessee businesses and The Dollywood Foundation, and a $10 million commitment from Walmart, Sam’s Club and the Walmart Foundation. These were announced commitments—not a report that $12 million had already been distributed.
How the $12 million total is made up
| Donor group | Announced amount | Recipient or scope | What the figure represents |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dolly Parton | $1 million | Mountain Ways Foundation | Personal donation announced October 4, 2024 |
| Parton’s East Tennessee businesses and The Dollywood Foundation | $1 million | Matching contribution tied to Parton’s donation | Pledge announced October 4, 2024 |
| Walmart, Sam’s Club and the Walmart Foundation | $10 million, increased from $6 million | Relief across Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee | Combined relief commitment announced October 4, 2024 |
The $12 million headline total is the sum of these three announced amounts. Parton’s $2 million contribution, including the match, was directed to Mountain Ways Foundation; Walmart’s $10 million was a broader relief commitment across affected states. The announcements do not establish that the full combined amount was already disbursed. Walmart’s October 4, 2024 announcement and a Dollywood-originated release republished by ESG Today give the contribution details.

Where Parton’s donation was directed
Parton announced a personal $1 million donation to Mountain Ways Foundation, described in the announcement as a registered 501(c)(3) that provides assistance to people affected by flooding from Hurricane Helene. Her East Tennessee businesses—Dollywood Parks & Resorts, Dolly Parton’s Stampede and Pirates Voyage Dinner & Show—together with The Dollywood Foundation pledged an additional $1 million to match her donation.
The announcement took place October 4, 2024, at Walmart store #678 in Newport, Tennessee. Parton said, “These are special people here; they’re my people,” and added, “I can’t stand to see anyone hurting, so I wanted to do what I could to help after these terrible floods.”

What Walmart’s commitment covered
At the same event, Walmart U.S. President and CEO John Furner announced that Walmart, Sam’s Club and the Walmart Foundation were increasing their commitment from $6 million to $10 million. The stated relief scope included communities in Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee.
The Walmart release also described local support from Walmart and Sam’s Club, including food, hot meals, water distributions, showers and laundry facilities. Furner said, “We’ll support people and communities until they’ve recovered.”
What the announcement does—and does not—tell us
The figures describe commitments announced on October 4, 2024. They should not be read as a current relief-fund balance or as confirmation that every dollar had been paid out by that date. Nor did the announcement say that Walmart’s $10 million went to Mountain Ways Foundation: that named recipient applies to Parton’s personal donation and the associated match.
For people deciding how to help communities after a disaster, the Associated Press has reported expert guidance to consider giving cash to organizations already working in the affected area, check whether a gift is matched, and recognize that rebuilding can take months or years. Its Helene guidance covered the immediate post-storm period, so its campaign dates and relief availability should not be treated as current: Associated Press: How to help those affected by Hurricane Helene.
