Yes. YouTube Live lists AV1 as a supported video codec for RTMP/RTMPS encoder streams, and YouTube’s encoder guidance allows either software or hardware encoders. The documentation does not make AV1 hardware-only. Your software must still be able to output AV1 with settings that meet YouTube’s ingest requirements.
What YouTube’s documentation confirms
YouTube’s live encoder settings list H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS video. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance describes both streaming software and hardware encoders. Read together, those documents support using a software encoder to send AV1, provided it can produce a compliant stream.
This is platform-level support, not a guarantee for every encoding application, version, operating system or computer. The cited YouTube pages do not provide a complete compatibility matrix for third-party software. Check that AV1 output is available in your encoder, then verify the incoming stream in YouTube’s preview before starting the broadcast.
Settings to check for an AV1 stream
Use the YouTube encoder settings for your chosen resolution and frame rate rather than copying a bitrate from a different codec or format. YouTube’s published RTMP/RTMPS guidance specifies:

- Frame rate: Up to 60 fps.
- Bitrate mode: CBR.
- Keyframes: A two-second interval is recommended and the interval should not exceed four seconds.
- Bitrate: Recommendations vary by codec, resolution and frame rate. Select the AV1 row matching your target in YouTube’s live encoder settings table.
AV1-specific limits
- HDR: AV1 is not supported for HDR in the cited YouTube settings guidance. If HDR is required, do not assume an AV1 ingest will meet that requirement.
- 4K and higher: For AV1 at 3840 × 2160 and above, YouTube specifies a minimum of two tile columns. Confirm the encoder exposes this setting and meets the requirement.
How to confirm your software encoder will work
- Check the encoder’s documentation or output settings for AV1 video encoding in the version and configuration you plan to use. YouTube’s acceptance of AV1 does not mean every software encoder offers it.
- Choose RTMP or RTMPS output and enter the stream URL and key shown in YouTube’s Live Control Room. Keep the stream key private.
- Set CBR, choose a bitrate from YouTube’s AV1 recommendation for your resolution and frame rate, and configure a two-second keyframe interval (never more than four seconds).
- For 3840 × 2160 or higher, set at least two tile columns. Do not select AV1 for an HDR stream under the cited guidance.
- Start the encoder and check YouTube’s stream preview and status before going live. YouTube says it automatically detects the encoder settings chosen in the Live Control Room setup context; that does not replace checking the preview or confirming that the software’s output is valid.
Common problems and what to check
- AV1 is missing from the encoder’s options: YouTube’s support does not add AV1 capability to third-party software. Check that application’s version, configuration and system requirements, or select a codec it offers that YouTube lists.
- YouTube does not receive a usable stream: Confirm the stream key and RTMP/RTMPS destination, then check that the encoder is actually outputting AV1 and that the preview reports an incoming stream.
- Stream settings are flagged or unstable: Recheck CBR, the codec- and resolution-specific bitrate recommendation, frame rate, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s settings table.
- AV1 is being used for HDR: The cited guidance does not support AV1 for HDR. Choose a workflow and codec consistent with YouTube’s current settings for the required format.
- A 4K-or-higher AV1 stream fails validation: Verify that the encoder uses at least two tile columns.
