Sam appears only as a photograph during an exposition scene about the Order of the Witwiccans, and that scene suggests he may have died offscreen. The film does not say so, and it gives no date or cause.
What the film actually shows
The answer depends on one short stretch of exposition. While Sir Edmund Burton explains the Order of the Witwiccans, Sam’s photograph appears among historical figures. Burton then describes himself as the Order’s last surviving member. SlashFilm’s account of the scene reads this as a possible implication that Sam died offscreen, while noting that the movie leaves the matter unresolved.
Those two elements are the whole of the evidence. The photograph is a visual reference, and Burton’s line is a claim about his own place in the Order. Neither is a statement about Sam’s fate.
How far the evidence goes

“Sam died offscreen” and “Sam is alive” are not equally supported. Only the first has any textual basis, and it is an inference from a single line and a photograph. Readers who want a firm answer will not find one in the film.
Why the actor’s exit does not explain the character’s fate
Shia LaBeouf played Sam in the earlier films and did not return for Age of Extinction. SlashFilm’s report on his comments links to The Guardian’s original interview. He explained his decision this way:

“I just don’t think right now there’s anywhere to take Sam. I’ve learned a great deal from Michael, as a person, as an actor, as a person on set. And it’s not that I don’t enjoy working with Michael. I love working with Michael. I would do any movie Michael wants to do. I just don’t think there’s anywhere to take it with Sam.”
That is LaBeouf’s account of his creative position at the time. It is not an in-story event, and nothing in The Last Knight ties Sam’s absence to the actor’s decision. Treat the two as separate questions.

Sam across the live-action films
Sam is a central character in the first three films. Paramount’s film descriptions identify LaBeouf in the 2007 and 2011 entries, and the 2009 sequel, Revenge of the Fallen, also featured him. The table shows how his presence changes through the Bay run.

- Find the exposition scene in which Sir Edmund Burton explains the Order of the Witwiccans. No published timestamp was available to confirm its position, so you may need to scrub through the film’s story-explaining sections.
- Note the moment Sam’s photograph appears among the historical figures.
- Listen for Burton’s line that he is the Order’s last surviving member, and note whether he refers to anyone else’s status.
- Check whether any line states Sam’s death, a date, or a cause. If none does, the implication above is the full extent of what the film offers.
Scope and availability
- The answer covers the live-action films directed by Michael Bay, from Transformers (2007) through The Last Knight (2017). Later Transformers productions may use separate timelines or continuity, so they should not be read into this answer.
