Yes. Bachhaus Eisenach says Johann Sebastian Bach has living descendants today, all descended from his second-youngest son, Johann Christoph Friedrich Bach, known as the “Bückeburg Bach.” The museum says some live in Wechmar, Thuringia, but it does not give a current count or name them.
What “the Bach family” means
The name can refer either to Johann Sebastian Bach’s direct descendants or to the larger historical family of musicians. Those are different scopes: a figure for the wider Bach family should not be mistaken for a count of Johann Sebastian’s descendants.
Johann Sebastian Bach’s living descendants
The Bachhaus Eisenach FAQ answers yes to whether Bach has descendants today. It identifies Johann Christoph Friedrich Bach as the ancestor of all present descendants and says some live in Wechmar, the Thuringian place traditionally associated with the family’s origins. The FAQ does not state how many descendants are living or provide their names.
The wider Bach family’s musical legacy
The historical account on bach.de says more than 70 descendants of Veit Bach worked as musicians. That is a statistic about the broader family descended from Veit Bach, not about Johann Sebastian Bach’s current descendants.

The same account identifies Wilhelm Friedrich Ernst, son of Johann Christoph Friedrich Bach, as the last musically significant representative of the family. He died in Berlin in 1845. This marks a point in the family’s musical history; it does not mean the family itself ended then.
What Bach’s own genealogy records
In 1735, Johann Sebastian Bach wrote a genealogy titled “Origins of the Musical Bach Family.” The Bach-Archiv Leipzig describes it as containing short biographical notes on 53 male family members. The family-tree information displayed in the archive’s museum was passed down by Bach himself.

The 53 refers to the relatives covered by that historical record—not to the number of descendants, either then or today. The genealogy is valuable evidence of how Bach documented his family, but it does not establish a present-day total.
