Spotify has not publicly declared political support for Israel in the sources reviewed. In an October 2023 statement, it condemned attacks in Israel, expressed concern about the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and described support for UNICEF. Criticism reported in 2025 focused on founder Daniel Ek’s investment in defence company Helsing—not an investment by Spotify itself. Those are different claims, and the available evidence does not establish that Spotify funds the Israeli military.
What Spotify said about Israel and Gaza
In a corporate statement dated October 18, 2023, Spotify said it was “deeply saddened by the recent terrorist attacks in Israel and troubled by the growing catastrophic humanitarian crisis in Gaza.” It also wrote, “Our hearts are with all of the people caught in the conflict.” Spotify’s statement acknowledged people affected on both sides; it did not endorse the Israeli government or military.

Spotify said it was extending its UNICEF partnership by two years, donating to UNICEF’s Global Emergency Fund for immediate humanitarian support, and matching employee donations to UNICEF’s humanitarian efforts. The statement listed examples of support, including medical supplies, fuel, mental health and psychosocial services. It gave no donation amount and did not say the contribution was earmarked for Israel or Gaza alone.
What the Daniel Ek and Helsing controversy is about
A September 18, 2025 Guardian report said Ek’s investment firm, Prima Materia, led Helsing’s latest funding round and that Ek was Helsing’s chairman. The report describes Helsing as a defence technology company developing AI systems for military use.

Spotify told the Guardian that “Spotify and Helsing are two totally separate companies.” The company also said Helsing was “not involved in Gaza” and was focused on Europe defending itself in Ukraine. Helsing separately said its technology was deployed to European countries for deterrence and defence against Russian aggression in Ukraine. These are statements attributed to the companies, not an independent ruling about every deployment or use of their technology.
The reported investment is associated with Ek and Prima Materia. It should not be described as Spotify investing in Helsing without evidence that Spotify itself made the investment. The Guardian report does not document Spotify corporate revenue being routed to Israel or the Israeli military, nor does it establish that Helsing technology was deployed in Gaza.

Why some artists are protesting
Artists have taken two different actions that are sometimes conflated. The Guardian reported that more than 400 artists and labels had joined No Music for Genocide, restricting their music on streaming services in Israel by editing release territories or asking a distributor or label to geo-block releases. That action limits availability in a particular country; it is not the same as removing music from Spotify everywhere.
Separately, artists including Massive Attack asked for their catalogues to be removed from Spotify over Ek’s Helsing connection. The band argued that the investment added a moral burden to the economic concerns it already had about the platform. That is the band’s characterization of the issue, not proof that Spotify corporate funds Helsing or Israel’s military.

How to interpret claims that Spotify “supports Israel”
The phrase can refer to several different things. A consumer service being available in Israel, a founder’s investment in a defence company, a company donation to a humanitarian organization, and a political endorsement are not equivalent evidence. Boycott advocates may consider several of them together when deciding whether to withdraw support, but that interpretation should be distinguished from what Spotify has publicly said or what reporting establishes.
A secondary OpenIntel digital-infrastructure audit describes Spotify as maintaining an Israel-facing consumer service and summarizes boycott advocates’ criticisms of alleged commercial ties. It is useful context for market presence and campaign arguments, but it does not establish that Spotify endorses Israeli state policy. Its findings should also be distinguished from Spotify’s own statement and the Guardian’s reporting.

For documentary viewers and listeners weighing a boycott, the clearest evidence-based summary is: Spotify’s public statement addressed the attacks in Israel and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, and described UNICEF support; the later Helsing controversy concerns Ek’s investment and his role at Helsing; and some artists have protested either Spotify itself or music availability in Israel. The available sources do not establish direct Spotify funding of Israel’s military.
