What did Sonic Team say about his eyes?
In a 2017 interview with Game Informer, interviewer Ben Reeves put the fan question directly to Iizuka: does Sonic have one eye with two pupils? Iizuka answered that Sonic has “two separate eyeballs,” adding that they may look connected but are not one eyeball.
Why do Sonic’s eyes look connected?
The design deliberately gives Sonic large eyes that read as a connected feature. Original character designer Naoto Oshima described “the big, connected eyes” as one of two major visual priorities, alongside Sonic’s spiky blue skin, in a report on a 2018 Game Developers Conference discussion by Oshima and original game designer Hirokazu Yasuhara.
That description explains the visual impression without changing Iizuka’s answer: the connected look is how the design is drawn, while the character has two separate eyeballs. Oshima and Yasuhara also discussed making Sonic striking but easy for children to draw; the available account does not say that this goal specifically dictated the eye design. Iizuka’s statement answers the question about Sonic’s character design. It does not establish the exact anatomy or continuity of every game, film, animation, or other adaptation. A particular depiction may make the eyes look more or less separated, but that visual difference alone does not overturn the design answer.
