Does Resident Evil Requiem Lean Too Much on the Series’ Past?

Resident Evil Requiem makes its history part of the experience. Here’s where its callbacks deepen the game—and where they risk overshadowing what is new.

Resident Evil Requiem deliberately revisits familiar ground: it returns to Raccoon City, draws on the feel of Resident Evil 2, and reconnects its story to the franchise’s wider lore. That continuity gives the ninth main installment a strong identity, but it also makes the criticism that it leans too heavily on the past a fair one. The key question is whether those callbacks deepen the new story—or sometimes do more of the work than its new characters and ideas.

Why the nostalgia question fits Requiem

Resident Evil Requiem was released on February 27, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC, Capcom says in its release announcement. It is the ninth mainline entry, and its return to Raccoon City and links to earlier lore are explicit parts of its design, not accidental resemblances. Capcom’s 2025 integrated report describes Grace Ashcroft as a new character and daughter of a figure from an earlier game, placing her story in the city associated with the series’ past.

The question was put directly to director Koshi Nakanishi in a January 2026 Game Informer interview: did the preview feel like “a greatest hits of Resident Evil?” Nakanishi acknowledged the echoes, saying, “The idea was to present an evolved version of some of the gameplay you know and love.” He agreed that Grace’s section strongly evokes Resident Evil 2, while describing Leon’s portion as an evolution of familiar play.

That answer captures both sides of the debate. Requiem is meant to feel recognizably like Resident Evil; the concern is whether recognition sometimes takes precedence over discovery. A useful test is to ask whether an old location, character, enemy, or gameplay pattern changes the meaning of the new story—or mainly produces the pleasure of recognition.

What the callbacks add—and what they risk

Raccoon City gives the story a past to reckon with

Returning to Raccoon City can make the series’ history part of the setting rather than a string of references. The city carries accumulated meaning for longtime players, while Grace’s story provides a new character through whom to revisit it. That can make the return feel consequential: the past is not just a backdrop if it shapes what the present characters face.

But a familiar location also arrives with expectations. If its main contribution is reminding players of earlier games, it risks turning the new story into a tour of remembered places. The franchise connection is clear; whether each return develops Grace’s perspective enough to stand on its own is the more demanding measure.

Grace’s familiar horror is effective, but not wholly new

Nakanishi’s acknowledgment that Grace’s section has a strong Resident Evil 2 feeling is unusually direct evidence for the nostalgia critique. That resemblance can be a strength: it signals a return to a style of survival horror the series made central. It can also make a new protagonist seem defined by the experience of an older one if familiar rhythms and imagery dominate her introduction.

  • RETURN TO RESIDENT EVIL — Enter the latest mainline chapter of Capcom’s iconic survival horror series for a chilling experience built around fear, tension, and action.

The available accounts establish the resemblance and Capcom’s intention to evolve known gameplay, but they do not quantify how much of Grace’s full story is repetition. The fair conclusion is narrower: the game deliberately draws on one of the franchise’s most recognizable templates, so its success depends on what it does with that template beyond evoking it.

Does Requiem bring enough new ideas?

Zombies with traces of their former lives

One of the clearest new mechanics begins with a horror premise: some zombies retain habits from their lives before turning. Nakanishi told Game Informer that they may continue activities linked to their former roles, and that observant players can use this behavior to their advantage. As he put it, “So retaining a little bit of their past lives is something that’s really new for the RE series here, and you’ll actually, if you look closely, be able to utilize that stuff to your advantage.”

This is more than a new detail in an old enemy type if those habits alter how players read threats and move through encounters. It gives the familiar zombie a behavioral dimension, and it makes attention to the environment potentially useful. The idea also fits Requiem’s larger concern with the past: memory is not only a reference for the audience, but a force operating inside the game world.

Perspective options change how players approach familiar horror

Capcom says players can switch between first- and third-person perspectives in real time and select among multiple difficulty settings in its March 4, 2026 update. Those options do not erase the series’ inherited structure, but they give players a choice in how they experience it. Perspective can change the feel of a tense encounter, while difficulty settings let players adjust the challenge.

These are meaningful ways to reshape familiar play, though they are not evidence by themselves that the story has moved beyond nostalgia. They answer a different question: whether Requiem gives players new control over how its recognizable horror is experienced. The zombie behavior is the more distinctive example of a new idea changing the substance of play.

Who will feel the callbacks most?

For longtime fans, connections to Raccoon City and the series’ lore can lend emotional weight to the new events. Capcom’s wider franchise is substantial: its March 2026 update reported more than 183 million cumulative game sales as of December 31, 2025. That figure describes the franchise’s reach, not Requiem’s reliance on nostalgia or how players respond to it.

For newcomers, the central test is whether Grace’s story and the game’s immediate systems remain legible without recognizing every echo. The sources available here establish that the game connects to earlier lore, but do not establish how much knowledge of older entries is necessary to follow the plot. It would be too strong to claim that familiarity is required—or that the callbacks never exclude a new player.

The strongest case in Requiem’s favor

Continuity is not automatically a failure of invention. A return can make earlier events matter in a new story, and familiar mechanics can be revised rather than merely repeated. Nakanishi’s description of the game as an evolved version of known gameplay is Capcom’s stated intent; the zombie behavior gives that claim a specific example beyond atmosphere and references.

There is also a favorable critical response. PC Gamer’s reviewer called Requiem a “highlight reel of the best moments in the series” and argued that revisiting Raccoon City does not tread on precious memories. That is one reviewer’s interpretation, not a measure of consensus, but it shows why the same density of callbacks can feel celebratory rather than stale: for some players, the return itself is part of the payoff.

Verdict: a deliberate return that sometimes risks feeling like a recap

Resident Evil Requiem leans on the series’ past by design. Its Raccoon City setting, its acknowledged Resident Evil 2 echoes, and its links to older lore make the nostalgia question unavoidable. The charge of “too much” is most persuasive when familiar material threatens to define the new story before Grace and its original ideas have a chance to do so.

Still, Requiem is not only a collection of references: Capcom points to evolved gameplay, real-time perspective switching, and zombies whose retained habits can become part of play. Whether those changes outweigh the callbacks is a matter of how much a player values reinvention versus continuity. The evidence supports a balanced judgment: the game makes the past a major attraction, while offering some real transformations alongside it.
