Does Music Improve Productivity? What the Evidence Says—and How to Choose a Playlist

Research does not prove that music boosts productivity or identify ten best songs. Lyrics may hinder attention and verbal work, so compare silence and music for the task you actually do.

Music is not a reliable productivity boost for everyone or every task. Research suggests its effects depend on what you are doing and what you listen to; lyrics can interfere with attention and verbal work, while some people may enjoy music or use it as a personal work cue. No scientific ranking establishes ten songs as the best for productivity. Instead, use the evidence to decide when music is worth trying—and test your own results against silence.

What research says about music and productivity

The broad evidence does not support the claim that music generally makes people more productive. A 2022 systematic review by Cheah, Wong, Spitzer, and Coutinho examined 95 articles comprising 154 experiments across six broad cognitive domains. The authors found that effects depended on the task and its difficulty, and that almost all reported effects hindered performance. They also noted that effects were concentrated in language and memory tasks. Read the systematic review.

That conclusion is not the same as saying music always hurts. The studies differed in their participants, music, tasks, and outcome measures, and the review described the overall findings as inconsistent and inconclusive. Enjoying music or feeling more focused is also not proof of greater accuracy or work output.

When lyrics may make work harder

Lyrics add verbal material that can compete with reading, writing, memorization, and other tasks involving language. In a randomized study of 102 participants aged 20–24, Shih, Huang, and Chiang found significant negative effects of lyrical background music on concentration and attention. They concluded: “The findings suggest that, if background music is played in the work environment, music without lyrics is preferable because songs with lyrics are likely to reduce worker attention and performance.” Read the 2012 study.

  • 40-Hour Long Battery Life and Fast Charging: With 40 hours of battery life with ANC on and 60 hours in normal mode, you can commute in peace with your Bluetooth headphones without thinking about recharging. Fast charge for 5 mins to get an extra 4 hours of music listening for daily users.
  • Dual-Connections: Connect to two devices simultaneously with Bluetooth 5.0 and instantly switch between them. Whether you're working on your laptop, or need to take a phone call, audio from your Bluetooth headphones will automatically play from the device you need to hear from.
  • App for EQ Customization: Download the soundcore app to tailor your sound using the customizable EQ, with 22 presets, or adjust it yourself. You can also switch between 3 modes: ANC, Normal, and Transparency, and relax with white noise.

The systematic review also found lyrics more often detrimental than instrumental music, particularly for memory-related tasks and reading comprehension. But instrumental music is not guaranteed to help: the review reports that it reduced performance in difficult tasks compared with easy ones.

A smaller randomized study published in 2016 also reported that lyrical music adversely affected attention more than music without lyrics. Its participants were 31 men and 34 women, all aged 20–24, so its narrow, small sample limits how broadly the finding can be applied. Read the study.

Match the listening choice to the task

Task or situation Listening choice to try first What the evidence supports
Reading, writing, memorizing, or other demanding verbal work Silence or lyric-free music Lyrics can compete with attention and verbal processing; difficult tasks may also be affected by instrumental music.
Routine or less demanding work Your preference, compared with silence Task demand and music interact, but the cited studies do not promise a productivity gain.
Work when you feel fatigued If you try music, consider lyric-free options and check your actual performance Some research suggests lyric-free music may counter fatigue-related declines in certain contexts; direct productivity applications need further investigation.

These are starting points, not prescriptions. The studies do not establish a universally best genre, tempo, volume, key, or playlist.

How long should you listen?

There is no evidence-based universal listening duration. A 2024 investigation included three studies: a pilot of 108 employees, a laboratory study of 252 students, and a three-week study of 247 employees. The authors reported mixed support overall, with an inverted U-shaped relationship between listening time and performance in some analyses—not a fixed number of hours that works for everyone. Test whether music helps you

  1. Choose one repeatable task. Use a task you can compare fairly, such as a similar reading session or routine work block.
  2. Try silence and your chosen music separately. Keep the task and working conditions as similar as you reasonably can; if the task involves language, include a lyric-free option.
  3. Compare more than how it feels. Note accuracy and sustained attention as well as enjoyment or perceived focus.
  4. Use the result only for that kind of work. A choice that suits routine tasks may not suit demanding reading, writing, or memorization.

A 2026 longitudinal questionnaire study found no simple music characteristic that uniformly predicted perceived academic performance; lyrics and tempo interacted with task demand. Because the outcome was self-reported academic performance, it does not establish objective productivity gains. Read the study.

Why there is no evidence-based “10 best songs” list

The cited systematic review evaluates background-music characteristics and cognitive-task outcomes; it does not validate specific tracks or rank songs. The other cited studies likewise do not establish ten songs that reliably improve productivity. Any such list is an editorial playlist, not a scientific result. A useful selection rule is to start with music without lyrics for verbal work, then compare it with silence and judge by your own accuracy and attention.
