After nearly two years in a coma, she wakes in Episode 7 with Lucas beside her. Her consciousness had been trapped in Vecna’s mindscape, but she finds a way back and survives the finale.
What happens to Max after Vecna’s attack?
Season 4 ends with Max severely injured and in a coma after Vecna attacks her. Season 5 reveals that while her body remains unresponsive, her consciousness is trapped in Vecna’s mindscape. TIME’s November 28, 2025 Volume 1 recap provides the earlier coma context; Netflix’s later recap explains what happens next.
How does Max escape Vecna’s mindscape?
Max and Holly navigate the mindscape together. Following the sound of Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill,” they dig through a barrier and reach the red void. There, Max recognizes a portal showing Lucas carrying her as a possible route back to the real world.
As she helps Holly escape, Max explains that music is not the only way back: “You just need something that connects you to the real world.” The line describes the show’s fictional mindscape, not medical advice. Netflix’s Volume 2 explainer covers their escape and Max’s return.
