The HBO series changes the timing and arrangement of some events from The Last of Us Part II, but those adaptation choices do not reverse his death. Joel also remains part of the story through flashbacks.
What happens to Joel in Season 2?
Abby kills Joel in the second episode. TheWrap’s April 20, 2025 interview with co-creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann confirms both the episode placement and the decision to make the death an early turning point.
Druckmann described it as “the act one break,” the incident that carries the rest of the season. The creators said they considered delaying the event, but did not pursue that for long. Mazin said Joel’s death had been part of the season’s plan from his first conversation with Pedro Pascal about the role. TheWrap’s interview with Mazin and Druckmann explains their reasoning.
Why does the show change parts of the game’s story?
The series adapts pivotal events for television rather than reproducing the game scene by scene. The creators have discussed changing pacing, moving revelations, and reshaping scenes so the story works across episodes and gives the show room to develop its characters.

Abby’s motive is explained earlier
In the show, Abby tells Joel that her father was the doctor who planned to operate on Ellie in the Season 1 finale. The series gives viewers this connection earlier than the game does, helping clarify the motive behind her actions.
Joel’s patrol partner is different
The show sends Joel on patrol with Dina, while Tommy stays in Jackson to help confront an infected horde. The change gives the episode room to show Joel and Dina together, establish the threat to the community, and develop Jesse and Ellie. It changes who is present and what the audience learns around the event—not whether Joel dies.

The story is shaped for episodes
Mazin has described the adaptation as following the creators’ instincts about what makes a strong television story. Druckmann also said the team planned how the remaining story would flow from Season 1 into Season 2 and beyond, allowing space for detours, backstories, and character development. Druckmann’s Game Informer interview discusses that approach and the season’s story structure.
Does Joel appear after he dies?
Yes. His death ends his role in the main timeline, but the series returns to him in flashbacks that deepen Ellie’s memories and their relationship. Season 2, Episode 6, “The Price,” expands the museum birthday visit from the game: Ellie and Joel explore an abandoned museum, with visual and soundtrack choices placing viewers closer to Ellie’s experience. The Television Academy’s interview with Mazin discusses the episode and its adaptation choices.

Has the show changed canon so Joel survives?
No. The evidence from Season 2 and the creators’ interviews supports a narrower point: the television version rearranges and expands material while keeping Joel’s death as a central event. “Canon could change” is not a reason to expect him to survive this season. The series can alter how the story is told without changing this outcome.
The game and show are different versions of the story, so details such as timing, scene partners, and what viewers know at a given moment can differ. Those changes are adaptation choices, not proof that the show has undone the game’s central event.

Why does the season stop before the whole game story is finished?
The television season covers only part of the broader story. Before Season 2 aired, Druckmann described Episode 7 as a breaking point intended to continue in a following season, rather than a conclusion to everything in the game. That explains why the season can end with major character and story threads still in motion; it does not establish a specific release date for what follows.
After the finale, Mazin and Druckmann described the ending as a natural place to stop and discussed how Joel’s death shapes the season’s continuing focus on Ellie and Abby, violence, love, and the consequences of seeking justice for loved ones. Their post-finale interview with Bell Media’s The Lede looks ahead to the continuation.
