Spoilers for all three seasons of Squid Game, especially Season 3, Episode 6. Yes. Gi-hun, Player 456, dies in the Season 3 finale. He chooses to sacrifice himself rather than let Jun-hee’s baby be killed. His last line, as transcribed by TIME, is: “We are not horses. We are humans.”
How Gi-hun dies in the finale
Gi-hun’s death comes in the final round of Sky Squid Game, not in the Season 2 cliffhanger. The game takes place across three towers, and players must eliminate someone at each stage to advance. In the later rounds, a death only counts if someone presses the required button.
Gi-hun protects Jun-hee’s newborn through the earlier rounds. At the final tower, Myung-gi tries to take the baby, and the two men fight. Myung-gi falls, but because the required button was not pressed to start that round, his fall does not satisfy the game’s rule. Gi-hun is left with a choice: kill the baby or give up his own life. He refuses to harm her, places her down, and jumps to his death. The baby wins the game.
What happens to the baby afterward?
The Front Man takes the baby from the arena. Six months later, he leaves her and the 4.56 billion won prize with his brother, Jun-ho. He also travels to Los Angeles and tells Gi-hun’s daughter, Ga-yeong, that her father has died, according to Netflix Tudum’s finale explanation.

Gi-hun’s last line and what it means
TIME transcribes Gi-hun’s final words as: “We are not horses. We are humans.” The line recalls the Front Man’s comparison of the contestants to horses for the wealthy VIPs watching the games. Read in that context, Gi-hun’s last words reject the idea that people can be treated as disposable entertainment. His decision gives the statement force: he recognizes the baby’s worth even when the game’s rules seem to demand her death.
That reading is an interpretation of the scene. Creator and director Hwang Dong-hyuk has described the sacrifice as carrying a broader message about resisting narrow self-interest and accepting shared responsibility. In Netflix Tudum’s account, Hwang says: “The message I wanted to communicate was that if we solely pursue our immediate self-interest, and refuse to self-restrain, sacrifice, or bear any costs — and if we don’t put our heads together — we have no future.” He also says, “Ultimately, the baby represents the future generation.”

Why the ending is definitive
Netflix identifies Season 3 as the final season, released globally on June 27, 2025, and its finale explainer describes Episode 6 as the planned series conclusion. In a later farewell interview, Hwang says he initially imagined Gi-hun surviving but chose a definitive ending, connecting the character’s transformation and the baby’s survival to hope for future generations.
