The events follow the fight against Upper Rank One. Shueisha’s volume 20 listing covers chapters 170–178 and describes Genya recovering after eating part of the demon. Chapter 179 then depicts his fate. A secondary chapter summary reports that Genya’s injuries worsen and he disintegrates as Sanemi tries to help him; the precise scene is in the licensed manga.
Why does Genya survive serious injuries before this?
Genya has an unusual ability: the official Demon Slayer anime character page says that eating a demon can temporarily give him a demon’s constitution. This is part of the story’s explanation for his ability to endure injuries, but it does not change the outcome in chapter 179.
