No—not on the evidence Nintendo and Illumination have made public. Fox McCloud’s appearance in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is confirmed, and its space setting makes the Star Fox crossover an easy one to imagine. But a cameo is not an announcement of a Super Smash Bros. film or a Nintendo cinematic universe. Shigeru Miyamoto and Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri have described a more scene-by-scene approach, not a long-range crossover plan.
Does Fox McCloud’s cameo mean a Super Smash Bros. movie is coming?
No such movie has been announced in the public statements covered here. Nintendo Life reported on March 26, 2026, that Fox McCloud would appear in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, with the reveal shared by the film’s official social accounts. The report raised a possible Nintendo universe or Smash Bros. movie as speculation—not as confirmed plans. Nintendo Life’s report on Fox’s reveal.
The distinction matters: Fox’s confirmed presence establishes a crossover in one film. It does not establish that Nintendo intends to assemble its characters for a feature-length adaptation of Super Smash Bros., or that this cameo is the first chapter of a connected series.
Why is Star Fox in the Mario Galaxy movie?
In a Forbes interview reported by Nintendo Life on April 1, 2026, Shigeru Miyamoto said Illumination proposed including Star Fox. Miyamoto supported the idea because the story takes place in space. He expected the suggestion might meet resistance within Nintendo, but said many people saw potential in it. That account points to a creative choice suited to this film’s setting, rather than evidence of a franchise-wide plan. Nintendo Life’s report on Miyamoto’s explanation.

The production is a collaboration between Nintendo and Illumination: Nintendo’s March 10, 2026 announcement named Miyamoto and Illumination’s Chris Meledandri as producers. Nintendo and Universal Pictures co-financed the film, and Universal distributed it worldwide. Nintendo listed an April 1, 2026 U.S. release and an April 24 release in Japan. Is Nintendo building a cinematic universe?
Public comments reported in April 2026 argue against treating Fox’s cameo as evidence of a planned, Marvel-style shared universe. Miyamoto said he did not expect every Nintendo character to join a movie as they do in Super Smash Bros. Meledandri said there was no 10-year plan for a Marvel-style Nintendo movie universe, and framed character inclusions as discussions about what would be fun in a particular scene.

“Right off the bat, I’ll say that unlike something like Super Smash Bros., I don’t think you’ll have a situation [where] all Nintendo characters would be joining,” Miyamoto said in remarks reported by Nintendo Wire from a Polygon interview.
Meledandri described the approach this way: “It’s much more geared toward conversations about what would be fun within a certain scene in the movie.” Nintendo Wire’s report on the interview.

Those comments are not a permanent ban on crossovers. The same report says Miyamoto was open to more cameos like Fox’s and mentioned Pikmin as an exception that can appear across Nintendo series. The supported conclusion is narrower: Nintendo has not announced a mass-crossover film plan, and its public comments caution against reading each cameo as a step toward one.
Has Nintendo announced a Star Fox movie?
The sources cited here establish Fox’s appearance in the Mario film, but not an announcement of a standalone Star Fox movie. They also do not establish whether a separate project is in confidential development; that cannot be inferred from a cameo or ruled out by the absence of a public announcement. No release date, cast, or story for a Star Fox film has been confirmed in these sources.

Does the film’s box office make a Smash movie more likely?
It shows that the Mario film reached a major commercial milestone, not that Nintendo has committed to a particular follow-up. NBCUniversal announced on June 8, 2026, that the movie had passed $1 billion worldwide in its tenth weekend. Its reported totals at that point were $429.6 million domestic and $577.5 million international; these are figures from that dated announcement, not final lifetime totals. NBCUniversal’s June 8, 2026 announcement.
The announcement does not establish audience demand for a Smash Bros. film, nor does it measure how much Fox’s cameo contributed to ticket sales. Strong performance may make more Nintendo films commercially attractive, but it is not evidence that a Star Fox or Smash Bros. movie has been greenlit.
