Yes, in the film’s piano duet with Aaron Copland, Bradley Cooper physically played the material shown on screen after months of practice. But the polished audio is not simply an untouched recording of Cooper’s performance: the film’s supervising music editor said the final duet was assembled from off-set recordings and recaptured, edited notes. The available accounts do not establish that Cooper played every piano passage heard throughout Maestro.
What Cooper says he learned for the Copland scene
In a December 6, 2023, Classic FM interview, Cooper said he took up piano for the film and learned the material viewers see him play. Describing the scene with Aaron Copland, played by Brian Clements, he said: “We spent months learning that piece. And that’s us playing. What you’re hearing is a much, much better version of playing – but that is us playing!”
Cooper also described the limits of his preparation plainly: “I can only learn the thing that you see!” His comments support a specific claim about the duet, not a claim that he mastered Leonard Bernstein’s piano repertoire or performed every piano part in the movie.
Why the piano sounds more polished than the visible performance
Jason Ruder, Maestro’s executive music producer and supervising music editor, gave more detail about the finished sound in a February 14, 2024, A Sound Effect interview. He described the duet as a hybrid: the team used material recorded off set, adjusted it, and recaptured and edited some notes. Ruder also said both actors practiced and played.

That production account explains how the scene can feature genuine playing by Cooper and Clements while presenting a cleaner, edited soundtrack. What viewers hear is a constructed final performance, rather than a guarantee that every audible note came directly from the on-screen take.
Does Cooper play all the piano music in Maestro?
The available accounts establish Cooper’s preparation and playing for the Copland duet, along with editing and supplementation of that scene’s audio. They do not provide a complete attribution of the pianist or performers for every piano passage in the film. So the careful answer is: Cooper did play piano for the specific scene, but it is not established that he played all the piano heard in Maestro.
