It can use less electricity than the same setup with a display attached, because the display is no longer drawing power. But a headless PC playing YouTube is still doing work: it stays awake, receives and decodes video, and renders playback. Its power use will generally be higher than its own idle draw, and there is no single watt figure that applies to every Linux PC.
What “headless” saves—and what it does not
Headless means the computer is running without a display connected or in use. That can reduce the power used by the whole setup, but it does not turn video playback into an idle or sleeping state. The computer still runs the browser, handles network data, decodes video, and renders frames.
ENERGY STAR distinguishes active operation from idle and sleep. Its computer specification describes active work as including processing and data access, while idle is a separate operating mode. A YouTube stream is an active workload, not a like-for-like comparison with a sleeping PC. See ENERGY STAR’s Version 8.0 computer specification.
Be clear about what is included in a reading. Measuring the PC alone does not count a display, speakers, router, or other equipment; measuring the whole setup does. Removing a display may lower whole-setup consumption, but the amount depends on the display and the computer.

What published measurements show
Two device-specific reports illustrate why a universal estimate would be misleading. They use different computers and test conditions, so their figures should not be treated as a direct comparison or as typical Linux results.

These readings establish only what those systems used under their reported conditions. They do not establish a typical figure for Linux PCs, a Linux-versus-Windows efficiency result, or the electricity used by a display that was absent from a headless measurement.

Why YouTube playback is not a fixed workload
The resolution and format actually played can change during a session. YouTube says quality can respond to connection speed, player or screen size, the quality of the original upload, and browser support for newer video formats; VP9 is one example of a format that can affect access to higher-quality playback. For a comparison, record the resolution, frame rate if relevant, browser, and whether hardware video decoding is working. The available sources do not identify one Linux browser setup as the lowest-power option.
YouTube’s general guidance gives approximate sustained connection speeds of 20 Mbps for 4K UHD, 5 Mbps for 1080p HD, 2.5 Mbps for 720p HD, 1.1 Mbps for 480p SD, and 0.7 Mbps for 360p SD. These are service recommendations, not power measurements. Its system-requirements page lists Ubuntu 10 or later among the requirements for premium video. Check YouTube’s system requirements and supported devices and its explanation of playback quality.

How to measure your own PC
A plug-in electricity meter at the wall is the practical way to measure the computer’s real consumption. For whole-setup use, include the equipment you want counted; for PC-only use, leave other devices outside the measurement. Compare the same machine under controlled conditions rather than comparing readings from unrelated systems.
- Set a consistent test. Use the same PC and power supply, browser, network, and playlist for each run. Keep the computer’s configuration unchanged.
- Measure settled idle. Leave the system awake at idle, not asleep, and let the meter settle. Record average watts and accumulated kWh over a representative interval.
- Measure playback. Play the playlist at a fixed resolution if possible. Confirm the resolution in YouTube’s player and note the browser and frame rate when relevant. Record average watts and kWh over an interval long enough to smooth short fluctuations.
- Repeat if readings vary. YouTube quality or system activity may shift during playback; repeat the runs and note any changes rather than treating a brief peak as the sustained draw.
- Compare like with like. If one run includes a display and another does not, say so. To isolate the display’s contribution, measure it separately or include it consistently in both whole-setup readings.
- Estimate a nonstop period from energy, not a peak. Use accumulated kWh over a representative interval to estimate a day or week. Convert that measured energy to cost using your own electricity tariff; there is no universal electricity price.
What to compare when choosing a setup
When assessing one PC against another, compare average wall watts during the same playlist and cumulative kWh for the same duration. Also record each system’s headless idle baseline, resolution and codec conditions, browser, and which peripherals are included. Without a shared controlled test, the ODROID and UP 4000 readings do not support ranking one as more efficient.
