The official title of Doctor Who Season 2, Episode 2 is “Lux.” Released on 19 April 2025, Russell T Davies’s story begins with people vanishing from a 1952 Miami cinema and builds toward a striking fourth-wall sequence that makes the audience part of the adventure. Its visual invention earns the episode’s most memorable moment; its quick resolution and lightly drawn characters keep the whole mystery from being equally satisfying.
What happens in “Lux”?
Spoilers for the episode follow. The Fifteenth Doctor and Belinda Chandra are trying to get Belinda home to 24 May 2025 when they arrive in Miami in 1952. Their landing puts them near the abandoned Palazzo Cinema, where fifteen people have disappeared. At the cinema, they encounter Mr Ring-a-Ding, a cartoon character who has crossed into the real world.
The mystery expands from a missing audience into a story about film, grief and control. Projectionist Reginald Pye has been feeding the cartoon light from old films in exchange for a filmic recreation of his late wife. The missing people are trapped on film, and Mr Ring-a-Ding is revealed as Lux, the God of Light, a member of the Pantheon of Gods. He turns the projectors on the Doctor and Belinda, trapping them as two-dimensional cartoon figures.
The pair escape through a television screen into the living room of Doctor Who fans, who help them return through the film strip. Lux then pursues the Doctor’s regenerative light and threatens to grow powerful enough to seek the light of a nuclear explosion. Belinda helps Reginald destroy the film stock. Sunlight reaches Lux, who expands and dissipates, freeing his captives. At the end, Mrs Flood calls the events a “trick of the light.”

Does the mystery build suspense?
The opening gives the adventure a useful, concrete question: what happened to the people who entered the abandoned cinema? Each new discovery changes the scale of the problem. A seemingly impossible cartoon intrusion leads to the film-bound victims, then to Lux’s appetite for light and the Doctor’s regenerative energy. That progression keeps the premise moving rather than treating the cartoon as a one-off visual gag.
The central idea also gives the mystery emotional texture. Reginald’s bargain is rooted in grief, but his attempt to preserve an image of his wife helps Lux trap other people. The episode links cinema’s power to conjure images with the danger of mistaking an image for a person. That is an evocative thread, though the story gives Reginald limited room to develop it before the plot moves to its climax.

Why is the fourth-wall scene the episode’s standout?
When the Doctor and Belinda tumble out of the film into a living room of fans, the episode stops merely showing a world in which fiction has come alive and addresses the audience’s relationship with Doctor Who directly. The viewers inside the story help the Doctor and Belinda get back into the film, so the metafictional detour also performs a plot function. It is the moment that most clearly turns the episode’s theme into its form.
That choice divides the response. Martin Belam of The Guardian called the sequence a scene that “managed to move the plot on, and act as showrunner Russell T Davies’ love letter to what Doctor Who has meant to so many people over so many decades.” Vicky Jessop of The Standard, by contrast, found the fan sequence strained and argued that the episode falters when it mocks the show’s fanbase. The scene is deliberately conspicuous; whether its direct address feels affectionate or self-conscious will depend on how readily a viewer accepts the show stepping outside its fiction.

How do the animation and period setting work?
Director Amanda Brotchie and Davies build “Lux” around a visual transformation rather than relying on dialogue to sell its premise. The production notes identify 1930s Fleischer Studios animation as an inspiration for Mr Ring-a-Ding’s design, while Framestore used hand-drawn techniques associated with that era. Penarth Pier in Wales stood in for 1952 Miami. The result gives the story a distinct contrast between a period adventure and the unruly flatness of a cartoon entering live action.
Stefan Mohamed of Den of Geek described “Lux” as “a visual delight” that enjoys playing with its premise. He also noted a risk of diminishing returns: the theatrical villain, period setting and godlike antagonist recall “The Devil’s Chord,” another recent story built around an encounter with a powerful, stylized figure. That comparison is useful because “Lux” is strongest when its film-and-cartoon mechanics make it feel specific, not simply when it reprises the scale and theatricality of a godlike foe.

The 1952 setting offers more than period decoration, but the episode’s engagement with segregation in America is limited. Jessop criticized how little the story explores that context, and the brief character sketches leave the setting’s social reality largely outside the central adventure. The episode’s formal invention is more developed than its historical perspective.

Yes, especially for viewers drawn to formally playful Doctor Who. The missing-person premise has momentum, the hand-drawn cartoon sequences give the episode a memorable visual identity, and the living-room encounter is an unusually bold way to make fandom part of the action. Alan Cumming voices Mr Ring-a-Ding, while Linus Roache plays Reginald Pye; Ncuti Gatwa and Varada Sethu lead the adventure as the Doctor and Belinda.

The ending is less persuasive than the journey to it. Sunlight and the destruction of the film stock resolve the danger quickly, and reviewers have questioned whether the solution feels too convenient. The Doctor and Belinda’s rapid closeness can also feel under-earned. “Lux” is best understood as an inventive, entertaining episode with one standout formal gamble—not an airtight mystery or an unqualified high point for the modern era.
