It strands Ruby Sunday on the Welsh coast after the Doctor disappears, then follows her through decades of isolation and a final attempt to change the moment that began it all. Doctor Who’s episode page lists it as Season 1, Episode 4.
What happens in “73 Yards”?
The Doctor and Ruby land on a Welsh clifftop. Nearby, the Doctor steps on a fairy circle marked with two scrolls: one says “Miss you,” and the other refers to “Rest in Peace, Mad Jack.” The Doctor vanishes. Ruby is left behind with a mysterious woman who remains exactly 73 yards away.
Whenever someone approaches the woman and speaks with her, they react with fear or hostility and leave Ruby. The episode never shows viewers what the woman says, making her effect on other people part of the mystery rather than a solved supernatural rule.
How Ruby is left alone
Carla turns away
Ruby seeks help from her mother, Carla. Carla speaks to the distant woman, then disowns Ruby. The encounter makes clear that even Ruby’s closest relationships are vulnerable to the woman’s influence, though the episode withholds the conversation that causes the break.

UNIT cannot keep her safe
A year later, Kate Lethbridge-Stewart tells Ruby that the Doctor has not been seen since the events in Wales. UNIT tries to engage with the woman, but the effort ends with Kate abandoning Ruby too. Ruby’s ordeal stretches across decades, with the woman maintaining the same distance and repeatedly isolating her from people who might help.
Ruby’s attempt to stop Roger ap Gwilliam
As time passes, Ruby connects Roger ap Gwilliam to Mad Jack and remembers the Doctor’s warning about the danger he will pose. She joins Gwilliam’s campaign team, hoping to stop him. When he is about to announce a nuclear escalation, Ruby positions herself at the woman’s characteristic distance. After the woman speaks with Gwilliam, he flees and resigns.

The outcome prevents the immediate threat, but it does not free Ruby. The woman continues to follow her, and the episode shifts from political suspense back to the personal cost of Ruby’s long isolation.
“73 Yards” ending explained
In old age, Ruby lies in a hospital bed and sees the woman approaching. The episode then returns to the original day on the Welsh coast. From the woman’s position, Ruby warns her younger self, who notices the warning and prevents the Doctor from stepping on the fairy circle.

The ending closes the loop by changing the initiating event: the Doctor does not vanish in the version of the moment the episode shows at the end. It does not, however, explain exactly what the woman is, how the loop works, or what she told the people who abandoned Ruby. Those unanswered questions are deliberate features of the episode, not details resolved on screen.
