Welch sees a lively new era taking shape around Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor and Millie Gibson’s Ruby Sunday, but argues that uneven writing and overloaded spectacle keep the opening from fully landing.
A strong new pairing, with room for the stories to catch up
Welch’s central enthusiasm is for the performers. Gatwa brings charisma to the Doctor, and his connection with Gibson gives the new central duo an appealing ease. The episodes also present a brighter, more polished visual world, full of imaginative ideas and forward momentum.
That potential is clearest when the Doctor and Ruby’s relationship carries the action. Welch’s reservation is that the scripts do not always give their emotional turns enough groundwork: exposition can feel blunt, shifts in tone can be abrupt, and spectacle sometimes competes with the story instead of sharpening it.
Space Babies: playful premise, uneven emotional payoff
The first episode sends the Doctor and Ruby to a futuristic baby factory. Its deliberately absurd setup offers a distinctive introduction to the new era, but Welch finds that the opening exposition is clunky. The climax also pivots toward emotion without, in his view, preparing that turn sufficiently.

The result is a gap between the episode’s inventive premise and its dramatic effect: the concept is memorable, but the story does not make every beat feel earned.
The Devil’s Chord: stronger atmosphere, too many ideas
Welch considers the second episode more successful in energy and atmosphere. Jinkx Monsoon’s Maestro gives it a vivid antagonist, while music, sound, lighting, and horror elements create a more distinctive mood.

Yet the episode keeps adding flourishes, including fourth-wall breaks and choreographed musical moments. Welch’s complaint is not that it lacks ambition, but that the pileup can dilute its effect. The climactic spectacle becomes exhausting rather than thrilling, leaving the episode overstuffed even as it improves on the opener in several respects.
Why the review’s verdict is hopeful, not conclusive
Welch’s assessment holds two ideas together: these first installments are rough around the edges, and they make the new era feel alive. The leads’ appeal and the show’s go-for-broke energy offer reasons to keep watching; the uneven exposition, tonal shifts, and overloaded finishes show where the opening falters. His conclusion is cautiously optimistic that the season may find a clearer shape as it continues.

That is a judgment about two episodes, rather than a verdict on the full 2024 season. Welch captured the tension in the review’s deck: “The exciting potential of Doctor Who’s latest incarnation is on full display in its new episodes, even as the show itself struggles to find its tonal and narrative footing again.” — Alex Welch, Digital Trends, May 10, 2024.
