No. YouTube’s live-stream ad guidance does not specify a minimum number of seconds or minutes a viewer must watch for a creator to earn from a live ad. Whether the channel is eligible to monetize and whether YouTube actually serves an ad are separate questions.
How ads and revenue work during a livestream
When a monetized channel turns on livestream monetization, pre-roll and display ads are enabled. Creators can also use mid-roll ads during the stream, either automatically or by inserting them manually. YouTube decides whether an available ad slot gets an ad; enabling a slot does not guarantee that an ad will appear for every viewer. If a viewer is not served an ad, they continue watching the livestream. If an ad does play, the viewer returns to the stream when it ends or when they skip it, if skipping is available. (YouTube Help: Tips on how ads work – Live)
Viewer watch time is not the same as creator eligibility
A per-viewer minimum watch time is different from the requirements a channel must meet to earn ad revenue. YouTube says creators must accept the Watch Page Monetization Module to earn ad and YouTube Premium revenue from eligible long-form and live-streaming videos viewed on Watch Page surfaces or embedded in the YouTube player. Channel eligibility also depends on YouTube Partner Program requirements, monetization policies, country or region availability, and the channel’s standing. Check YouTube’s current guidance and your channel’s Studio status, since eligibility can vary by feature and change over time. YPP watch-hour thresholds are channel-eligibility accounting rules, not a minimum time an individual viewer must watch a livestream or ad. YouTube says livestreams that are unlisted, deleted, or not converted to VOD do not count toward the cited qualified-watch-hour threshold.
Automatic and manual mid-rolls

YouTube’s automatic option places mid-rolls at natural breakpoints. Creators can choose a low, medium, or high ad frequency. YouTube also describes controls intended to reduce disruption, including limiting interruption for channel members, temporarily pausing mid-rolls for viewers who send gifts or Super Chats and Stickers, and snoozing mid-rolls for all viewers during high-engagement moments. These controls affect ad insertion; they do not make an ad serve to every viewer.

YouTube reported that channels using automatic live mid-rolls saw an average uplift of over 20% in in-stream ad revenue per hour compared with channels that did not enable them, across 207 countries in January 2024. Manual mid-rolls
Creators can insert mid-rolls through Live Control Room. A manual insertion creates an opportunity for an ad break, not a promise that YouTube will fill the slot or that each viewer will receive an ad.

What this means for a viewer or creator
- As a viewer: You do not have to stay for a stated number of minutes to make an ad count toward the creator’s livestream earnings; YouTube’s cited live-ad guidance specifies no such threshold.
- As a creator: Focus on channel and module eligibility, monetization settings, and the ad controls available in Live Control Room. Do not infer guaranteed earnings from an enabled ad slot.
- For either: YouTube’s guidance does not establish a fixed amount earned per viewer, ad, or hour. Actual ad delivery and revenue are not guaranteed.
