Do Time-of-Use Electricity Rates Make a Home YouTube Streaming PC Cheaper Than a VPS?

TOU rates do not move a 24/7 stream off peak. Measure the PC’s actual draw, calculate electricity by tariff period, and compare it with a VPS that can encode your stream and cover its data transfer.

Sometimes—but a time-of-use (TOU) tariff alone does not make a home PC cheaper. A stream that must stay live 24/7 still runs during peak-price hours. Compare the PC’s measured wall-power use at your actual rates with the full cost of a VPS that can handle your encoding workload and its continuous outbound video. The result depends on your equipment, tariff, stream settings, broadband, and VPS transfer allowance; without those inputs, there is no defensible universal winner.

What a fair comparison includes

Compare both options over the same billing period and for the same stream. For the home PC, use its measured average power while running the actual encoder and stream workload—not the power-supply rating or a generic desktop estimate. For a VPS, include a plan capable of running that workload and enough included outbound transfer, plus any overage charges.

  • Home electricity: the marginal energy price during each time period, the PC’s average wall draw, and whether its full power use is genuinely additional.
  • Other home costs: material extra cooling, equipment purchases or replacement, and any broadband upgrade needed for continuous streaming.
  • VPS costs and constraints: the plan price, compute and memory suitability, region-specific transfer allowance, overage rules, and the time required to configure, monitor, and recover the stream.
  • Reliability and effort: compare exposure to home power and internet outages with the VPS setup and recovery work. Do not assume either option is trouble-free.

If the computer would already be on for another reason, count only the extra power caused by streaming. If you would otherwise switch it off, count its full measured draw. Treat already-owned equipment as a sunk cost when comparing future spending, but include purchases or replacement costs that streaming makes necessary.

How to calculate the home PC’s TOU electricity cost

For a constant average load during one rate period, energy use is:

Measure the actual load

Use a plug-in electricity usage monitor to measure the whole computer at the wall while it runs the intended encoder and stream. Measure across representative operating periods; a short peak reading or the rating printed on the power supply is not a substitute for average workload draw. The comparison guide at Energy Saver recommends using actual power use and the user’s own electricity rate.

Use the tariff that applies to the hours you stream

Check your current utility tariff and bill for the marginal energy charge in each TOU period, including applicable seasonal schedules. Time-varying rate schedules differ across the day and season; the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s overview of time-based pricing explains that rates can vary on those bases. Also check whether fixed charges, minimum bills, demand charges, or tier effects change the comparison. Fixed charges you pay regardless of this stream should not be mistaken for its incremental energy cost.

Do not assume the stream can avoid expensive hours

TOU changes the bill according to when a load runs; it does not move a required continuous stream into off-peak hours. A 24/7 feed uses electricity in every rate period it crosses. You can calculate the cost period by period, but cannot claim off-peak savings by scheduling around peak periods unless the stream itself is allowed to stop.

Estimate the VPS’s compute and transfer costs

A VPS sends the continuous video feed upstream from its server to YouTube. Its monthly price is only a useful comparison if the plan can run the actual encoder and includes enough outbound transfer, or if any excess transfer remains affordable. YouTube’s encoder recommendations provide a way to estimate the data demand of a chosen stream setting; the VPS provider’s transfer rules determine how that demand is billed.

Use your actual stream settings to estimate data

YouTube’s current H.264 guidance recommends 14 Mbps for 4K/30fps, 17 Mbps for 1080p/60fps, and 8 Mbps for 720p/60fps. These are platform recommendations, not mandatory settings for every creator. At a continuous 5 Mbps, the feed would send roughly 1.62 TB over 30 days before protocol overhead, calculated as 5 megabits per second × 86,400 seconds per day × 30 days ÷ 8 bits per byte using decimal units. This is a calculation, not a published usage statistic.

Estimate transfer from the bitrate and schedule you will actually use, then check the provider’s region-specific included amount and overage terms. Do not assume a plan’s advertised transfer allowance applies identically in every region.

Do not equate a low entry price with adequate encoding performance

As one current price example, Amazon Web Services’ Lightsail pricing page, accessed in 2026, lists a Linux/Unix public IPv4 plan at $5 USD/month with 2 vCPUs, 0.5 GB memory, 20 GB SSD, and 1 TB transfer. AWS documentation says allowances can vary by region and outbound transfer over the allowance can incur additional charges. Check the current terms for the region you would use. The listed entry bundle is a price example, not proof that it can reliably encode your chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec.

Before relying on any VPS tier, test the actual workload on that plan. Compute capacity, memory, transfer, and the final bill are separate questions; a low monthly sticker price does not answer all four.

Work through the decision in order

  1. Measure the PC: run the actual encoding and streaming workload and record whole-system average wall watts over representative periods.
  2. Map your tariff: record the current marginal energy prices, TOU periods, and seasonal schedule that apply where you live.
  3. Calculate electricity by period: multiply the measured load by the hours and marginal price in each period, then sum. Use only incremental watts if the PC would already be running; otherwise use its full measured load.
  4. Add relevant home costs: include material extra cooling, necessary equipment purchases or replacement, and a broadband upgrade if needed. Keep sunk costs distinct from new expenses.
  5. Price a suitable VPS: select a plan that can run the actual encoder, estimate outgoing data at your chosen bitrate and schedule, and check regional transfer allowances and overage billing.
  6. Compare on equal terms: use the same month and stream workload for both totals. If the costs are close, account for who will handle setup, monitoring, and recovery.

When each option may make sense

A home PC may be the lower-cost choice when

  • It is already running and streaming adds relatively little power consumption.
  • Your measured load and the tariff for the actual hours produce a lower incremental energy bill than a suitable VPS’s total cost.
  • Your home connection and equipment can sustain the stream without a new broadband plan or other material expense.

A VPS may be the lower-cost choice when

  • The home PC would otherwise be off, draws enough power to make round-the-clock operation costly, or would require additional equipment or connectivity spending.
  • A VPS plan that passes your workload test has an affordable total price after transfer and any overages are included.
  • You prefer not to leave a home computer running and are willing to manage the VPS setup and recovery.

These are decision conditions, not promises of savings. The tariff, measured load, workload, and provider terms decide the result.

Streaming checks that affect the comparison

Set and test the encoder workload you are pricing

Changing resolution, frame rate, or bitrate changes the workload and the outbound data estimate. YouTube recommends constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval, with keyframes no more than four seconds apart. Its encoder guidance recommends testing before going live with audio and movement similar to the intended stream, then monitoring stream health and reviewing messages during the event. A cheaper PC or VPS estimate based on different settings is not an apples-to-apples comparison.

Use content you have the right to stream

Cost planning does not establish whether a video is suitable for YouTube. Confirm that you have the rights needed for the video, music, and other material in a continuous stream, and check YouTube’s applicable content and live-stream rules. A technically stable feed does not by itself establish permission to broadcast its contents.

Common comparison mistakes and fixes

  • Using the power-supply label as the PC’s average draw: measure the whole computer at the wall during the actual workload.
  • Applying one average electricity price to all hours: use the current marginal price for each TOU period and season in which the stream runs.
  • Counting the whole PC bill when it is already on—or none when it must stay on: compare incremental streaming power in the first case and full measured draw in the second.
  • Choosing a VPS by sticker price alone: verify compute and memory against the workload, then include outgoing transfer and regional overages.
  • Comparing different stream settings: hold resolution, frame rate, bitrate, codec, and schedule constant when estimating both options.
  • Ignoring home connectivity or outages: include a required broadband upgrade and weigh home power or internet interruptions against VPS management and recovery effort.
