Sometimes—but a caption track attached to a prerecorded YouTube upload does not automatically become captions on a 24/7 live broadcast. A continuous stream needs captions sent to YouTube through its live-caption workflow, and whether a particular streaming service passes captions through from each video depends on that service. YouTube’s documentation does not establish that every service does so.
Three different caption situations
A normal uploaded video
For a prerecorded video uploaded to YouTube, the creator can add captions by uploading a caption file, entering captions manually, or submitting transcript text for automatic syncing. YouTube may also create automatic captions for supported languages when processing and audio conditions allow. They are not guaranteed, may take time to appear, and can contain errors; review them for accuracy. YouTube’s automatic-caption guidance describes availability and limitations, while its subtitle and caption instructions explain creator-supplied tracks.
A prerecorded video played in a live broadcast
If a service plays your video as part of a continuous YouTube live stream, the stream is a live caption case. The caption track associated with the source upload is not, by itself, proof that captions will be sent with the live output. YouTube says captions must be sent to the live stream, using embedded EIA 608/CEA 708 captions or supported caption software. Its documented embedded-caption workflow supports one caption track on YouTube, even though the caption standards can support more. See YouTube’s live-stream caption requirements.
The saved recording after the stream
Live automatic captions, where available, do not remain on the video after the stream ends. YouTube says it generates new captions through the VOD process, and those may differ from the live captions. Treat the archived recording as a separate caption check rather than assuming the live track will carry over. YouTube’s automatic-caption guidance covers this distinction.

What 24/7 services do—and what to verify
A 24/7 YouTube streaming service handles playback or playout, but YouTube’s caption documentation does not establish whether any unnamed provider extracts caption tracks from uploaded videos and inserts them into its live output. Ask the service directly before relying on captions. Get specific answers to these questions:
- Does the system transmit caption data from each prerecorded asset into the live encoder and YouTube stream, or does it play only the video and audio?
- Does it accept embedded captions, separate caption files, or both? If separate files are accepted, how are they associated with each video in a playlist?
- Will viewers see a selectable caption track in the YouTube player, or are captions burned into the picture? Burned-in text is always visible but cannot be switched off or selected as a language track.
- Which languages and how many caption tracks are supported for a live stream?
- Does the saved broadcast receive a separate caption track, and is that track selectable on the archived video?
These questions distinguish source-video captions from captions actually delivered to the live stream and its archive. A provider’s general claim that it supports captions is not enough to establish how your specific files, language tracks, and replay will behave.

How to prepare captions for a 24/7 broadcast
Prepare each source video
- Check the uploaded video first. Open it on YouTube and confirm whether a caption track is available and accurate. Do not assume automatic captions exist; YouTube availability depends on language, audio quality, and processing.
- Add or correct the source captions where needed. In YouTube Studio, use the video’s subtitles workflow to upload a timed caption file, enter captions, or submit transcript text for auto-sync. Review the result, especially names, lyrics, accents, overlapping speech, and documentary terminology.
- Ask your 24/7 provider how to supply the live caption data. Confirm accepted format and whether captions are tied to each playlist item. A caption file saved on the YouTube upload is not necessarily delivered when another system plays that content into a live stream.
Configure captions for the live stream
- Choose a supported delivery path. YouTube documents embedded EIA 608/CEA 708 captions or supported caption software that sends captions to the stream. Confirm that your encoder or service supports the selected path.
- Enable and configure the live caption workflow. Follow the current YouTube Studio and encoder instructions for the stream entry point. YouTube’s documented setup uses one caption feed per stream entry point; check current instructions because settings and feature availability can change.
- Test before relying on the channel. Watch the live player from a viewer account and check that captions can be selected, are synchronized, and display in the intended language. Check the archive separately after the broadcast.
YouTube’s live-caption instructions list Total Eclipse, Case CATalyst, CaptionMaker, and StreamText.Net among software or delivery options. Their inclusion in that documentation is not a statement about current pricing, availability, or suitability for every 24/7 provider. Consult the current instructions and confirm compatibility with your own setup.
Automatic captions: useful, but not a substitute for verification
YouTube may generate captions for uploaded long-form videos and Shorts using speech recognition, and its documented live automatic-caption feature is for individual streams in English, subject to availability and stream conditions. Automatic captions can be delayed or unavailable. Pronunciation, accents, dialects, background noise, and speakers talking over one another can reduce accuracy. For a live broadcast, do not assume that automatic captions on source uploads will be transmitted as the live caption feed; check the player during a test stream.

Viewers can select captions only when a caption track exists for the video they are watching. YouTube’s caption controls guidance notes that captions may not be available if neither the owner supplied them nor YouTube automatically added them.

StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for keeping uploaded videos live around the clock: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It does not broadcast from a camera. StreamNeo’s stated features include looping and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, but YouTube caption documentation does not establish whether StreamNeo passes caption tracks from each uploaded video into the live stream. If selectable captions matter, ask StreamNeo specifically about caption-file passthrough, supported languages, and the resulting archive before depending on it.
