Dispatch Review: A Superhero Workplace Comedy That Plays Like Interactive TV

AdHoc Studio’s Dispatch pairs an ex-hero, a team of former villains and office comedy with light emergency strategy. Its character work shines, though the experience often feels closer to interactive TV than a conventional game.

Dispatch is a superhero story about what happens after the hero loses his suit—and takes a desk job. AdHoc Studio’s workplace comedy makes its strongest case through its characters, writing and voice performances; its dispatch strategy adds useful context, but not enough moment-to-moment play to satisfy everyone looking for a conventional game.

What is Dispatch about?

Set in modern-day Los Angeles, Dispatch follows Robert Robertson, also known as Mecha Man. After his mech suit is destroyed, Robert joins a superhero dispatch center, where he manages a team of former villains trying to make good. Instead of spending the story as a costumed hero, he has to work with the people answering emergencies—and deal with the relationships forming around the office.

AdHoc Studio creative director Dennis Lenart described the intended mix as the workplace-comedy feel of The Office combined with a superhero team. That premise gives the game an in-world reason to move between character scenes and managing a roster: the office is both the setting for the comedy and the place where the heroes’ work gets coordinated. Lenart said, “It was very important to us that the narrative and gameplay elements blend together seamlessly.” (Unreal Engine interview)

How does Dispatch play?

The experience alternates between narrative scenes and emergency dispatch. In story sequences, choices and dialogue affect relationships, allegiances and how the story unfolds. On the strategy map, you assess emergencies and send heroes whose abilities suit the situation, while weighing the risk of leaving other calls unattended. You also manage the roster and upgrade abilities.

The layers feed into one another: the official Xbox description says story choices shape dispatch options, while mission performance feeds back into the narrative. That supports a sense of consequence, but it does not establish how many major branches the story has or promise radically different outcomes. Think of choices as shaping relationships and the flow of play, not as evidence of a dramatically different story for every decision. (Xbox Wire; PlayStation Store)

Is Dispatch more like a TV show or a game?

The balance leans toward the show. GameSpot reviewer Jordan Ramée wrote, “If not for snippets of gameplay, Dispatch would simply be a great TV show that I would want to tune into every week.” The review praises the writing and voice acting for keeping the characters engaging, while its comparison points to the limited density of the play between scenes. (GameSpot)

PC Gamer similarly praised the ensemble and its second-chance story, calling the result a “triumphant season of interactive TV” while wishing for more interactivity. GamesRadar+ also emphasized its eight-episode, animated-TV quality. Those are reviewers’ assessments, not measures of how much agency every player will feel. Taken together, they describe a game best approached as a character-led story with strategic intervals—not as a steady stream of action or a deep tactics game. (PC Gamer; GamesRadar+)

What works—and what may not

The ensemble and workplace comedy

The appeal rests on watching a mismatched team navigate redemption, office dynamics and superhero responsibilities. Reviewers singled out character work, writing and voice acting as strengths. If you are tired of stories focused on a lone hero’s next fight, Robert’s supporting role and the ex-villains’ attempts to change give the genre a different angle.

The strategy has a job in the story

Dispatch decisions are not presented as a separate mode bolted onto the fiction: you are coordinating the team Robert works with, and mission outcomes can feed back into the narrative. The tradeoff is that the dispatch layer shares time with long stretches of dialogue and cinematic storytelling. Readers hoping for frequent, mechanically demanding play may find the strategy too light; readers who enjoy a story punctuated by roster choices may find the balance more appealing.

The humor is for an adult audience

The tone includes workplace romance, insults and crude humor. Steam also lists sexual content and nudity among the game’s tags, which are useful indicators but not a complete content guide. The comedy’s adult edge is part of the experience, rather than a family-friendly superhero treatment. (Steam; PC Gamer)

Who should play Dispatch?

  • Consider it if you want character-led superhero fiction, an ensemble cast, workplace comedy and choices tied to team relationships.
  • Be cautious if you want constant action, extensive tactical systems or proof that choices create large, radically different story branches.
  • Check the tone first if crude jokes, adult material or workplace romance are not what you want from a superhero story.

For a narrative-adventure comparison, the useful questions are whether the characters hold your attention, whether the choices feel consequential enough for a cinematic structure, whether matching heroes to emergencies is engaging, and whether the humor suits you. The game’s premise is unusual; its appeal depends on being comfortable with the amount of play it puts between story scenes.

Platforms, release and accessibility

Steam lists an October 22, 2025 release date, and PlayStation has a PS5 product page. A TechRadar report said the game had arrived on Switch 2 and reported an Xbox release was upcoming; Xbox Wire announced Xbox Play Anywhere availability for summer 2026. Those reports place the Xbox announcement in the past relative to this article’s October 7, 2026 date, but they do not by themselves confirm current store availability. Check the relevant platform’s live listing for where it can be played now. (Steam; PlayStation Store; TechRadar; Xbox Wire)

For the PS5 listing specifically, PlayStation describes accessibility options including large or clear text, color alternatives, visual-comfort settings, individual audio controls, subtitle options, simplified quick-time events, adjustable difficulty, control and tutorial reminders, and pausing during gameplay or cinematics when offline. These are PS5-listed features; do not assume the same options are available on every other platform. (PlayStation Store)

Reception and sales context

On Steam, the listing showed 97% positive from 108,925 English-language reviews and 96% positive from 1,759 recent reviews in a snapshot observed October 7, 2026. These are changing Steam user-review figures, not a cross-platform score. Separately, AdHoc Studio reported that the game sold over 1 million copies in its first 10 days, a launch-period figure rather than a current lifetime sales total. (Steam; Unreal Engine interview)
