That gap helps explain why the film has been described as a box-office bomb, but it does not establish that it was Disney’s biggest such failure in nearly a decade: gross receipts are not studio profit, and the available figures do not provide a consistent ranking of net losses. The film also drew public debate over casting, adaptation choices, representation, and the stars’ public statements.
What did Snow White earn at the box office?
Box Office Mojo lists a worldwide theatrical gross of $205,679,463, comprising $87,203,963 in domestic receipts and $118,475,500 internationally. The listing was accessed October 8, 2026.

The Numbers estimates the production budget at $269.4 million and puts worldwide box office at approximately 0.8 times that estimate. The comparison is a rough measure of theatrical scale, not a calculation of profit or loss. Theaters retain part of ticket sales, and these figures do not supply marketing costs, other expenses, or revenue from later distribution.
Opening weekend in context
Box Office Mojo lists the domestic opening at $42,206,415. The Associated Press reported a studio-estimated domestic opening of about $43 million and a global launch of $87.3 million on March 23, 2025. These are differently attributed figures: the database listing is the title-level opening figure, while AP was reporting the studio’s estimate at the time.

AP noted that the domestic opening trailed Dumbo (2019), at $46 million, and Cinderella (2015), at $67.9 million. Those comparisons describe opening weekends, not final grosses or net losses. AP also contrasted Snow White with The Lion King (2019), which earned more than $1.6 billion worldwide.
Was it Disney’s biggest box-office bomb in nearly a decade?
The available figures do not prove that ranking. The worldwide gross and estimated production budget show a weak theatrical relationship, but do not establish the studio’s total financial result. Nor do they compare Snow White with other Disney releases using a single measure, such as estimated net loss or final worldwide gross.
“Biggest box-office bomb” can mean different things: lowest gross, weakest gross relative to budget, or greatest net loss. A sound comparison would need consistent figures for each film, including release year, domestic opening, final domestic and worldwide gross, and budget estimates—and even that would not establish net loss without fuller cost and revenue data. The AP opening-weekend comparisons alone cannot settle the superlative.

What controversies surrounded the film?
The debates arose from several distinct issues. Coverage documented the disputes and publicity context, but does not establish that any one of them caused the film’s box-office performance.

Rachel Zegler, who is of Colombian descent, faced racist backlash over her casting as Snow White. Public discussion also focused on the political associations of Zegler and Gal Gadot, who plays the Evil Queen. These debates were part of the film’s reception, but the cited coverage does not quantify their effect on ticket sales.
Changes to the original story
Zegler described aspects of the 1937 animated film’s romance as dated and criticized the prince’s behavior. The resulting argument was not simply about whether the remake should change the original: some viewers objected to changes, while others questioned whether the story’s familiar conventions should be retained.

The seven dwarfs and representation
Actor Peter Dinklage criticized the premise of retelling a story featuring dwarfs. Disney said it consulted members of the dwarfism community to avoid reinforcing stereotypes. Debate also followed over the use of CGI characters rather than dwarf performers. The disagreement touched both the story’s representation and the production’s casting choices.
Politics and publicity
Reporting described controversy around public statements and the actors’ perceived political positions. The Associated Press reported that Disney scaled back the premiere amid public-relations issues. That release context documents pressure around publicity; it does not demonstrate that the controversy caused the final theatrical result.

Disney describes the 2025 release as a live-action musical reimagining of its 1937 animated classic. Marc Webb directed, Erin Cressida Wilson wrote the screenplay, and Zegler stars opposite Gadot. Disney says Benj Pasek and Justin Paul wrote original songs for the film. Webb described the approach as looking at the character and story through “a slightly new lens” in a pre-release Disney interview.
The US wide release was March 21, 2025; the listed international rollout began March 19. The Numbers lists a 109-minute runtime and a PG rating. Disney+ displays a runtime of 1 hour 53 minutes; those source listings differ, so the figures should not be treated as identical. Disney+ lists the film for streaming, with availability subject to region and current service terms.
