Disney has not canceled the planned Avatar destination at Disney California Adventure, but it has not announced a construction date either. Reporting from D23 in August 2026 places Disneyland Park’s Tomorrowland reimagining ahead of the Avatar project, with Avengers Campus and Coco work before both. Disney has not said how long Avatar’s place in the sequence has shifted.
What changed in Disney’s project order?
Disney announced the Tomorrowland reimagining on August 16, 2026. The official announcement describes new attractions and more open spaces, but gives no construction or opening date. Thomas Mazloum, chairman of Disney Experiences, said Disney would reveal more about the plans “in the years ahead.” Disney’s Tomorrowland announcement
Los Angeles Times reporting dated August 15 said Disneyland Resort President Jill Estorino placed Tomorrowland after the Avengers and Coco projects and before Avatar. BlogMickey’s August 18 report, quoting Estorino from a D23 media session, gave the sequence as Avengers Campus, Coco, Tomorrowland, then Avatar. Estorino said: “In the short term, our development focus is going to shift to Tomorrowland, and then return to the Hollywood Backlot in the future to enable this work.” Los Angeles Times report · BlogMickey report
This is a reported sequencing change, not a dated construction delay. The sources do not establish how many months or years Avatar has moved back, and Disney has not publicly explained the change.

Disney’s June 5, 2025 announcement said the Avatar destination was planned for part of the Hollywood Backlot at Disney California Adventure. Disney characterized the project as early-stage and said it would share construction timing later. Its current project page continues to list Avatar as planned for the Hollywood Backlot, with further details still to come. Disney’s 2025 Avatar announcement · Disneyland Resort project updates
That location matters: the Avatar destination is planned for Disney California Adventure, while the newly announced Tomorrowland work is at Disneyland Park. They are separate projects in the same resort, not two versions of one land.

What happens to Monsters, Inc.?
Disney’s 2025 announcement said Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! would close in early 2026 to make way for the Avatar project. Later reporting from BlogMickey said the attraction would remain open into 2027, consistent with Avatar now following Tomorrowland in the reported order. Disney’s current project page does not give a replacement closure date, so the later report should not be read as an official new date from Disney.
