That was a phased rollout, not a single date when every account was blocked. The change has already happened: Disney’s current guidance says people outside a subscriber’s Household need an eligible Extra Member add-on or their own subscription.
What Disney confirmed about the start date
The confirmed date was a month, not a universal day. On May 7, 2024, Disney CEO Bob Iger said enforcement would begin in a small number of markets the following month, then roll out “in earnest” globally in September. Disney’s August 2024 update again described September as the broader rollout period. Disney’s May 2024 earnings-call transcript records the timing.

Disney had first discussed paid sharing on February 7, 2024, saying account holders would eventually be able to add people outside their household for an additional fee. The initial enforcement phase began in select markets during summer 2024. On September 25, Disney said the expanded paid-sharing program was available across major regions; by November 14, it said anti-sharing initiatives were operating in approximately 130 countries. These milestones describe expansion over time, not a simultaneous global lockout.
- February 7, 2024: Disney discussed a future paid-sharing option in its Q1 earnings-call transcript.
- May 7, 2024: Iger identified September as the month for the broader rollout.
- June 2024: The initial phase began in select markets.
- August 7, 2024: Disney said the initiative had started and would expand in earnest in September, in its Q3 earnings-call transcript.
- September 25, 2024: Disney published its paid-sharing explainer and described availability across major regions.
- November 14, 2024: Disney reported operation in approximately 130 countries in its Q4 earnings-call transcript.
So a headline saying the start date was “confirmed” refers to Disney’s 2024 announcement. It should not be read as news of a future 2026 launch.

What Disney means by a Household
Disney defines a Household as the collection of devices associated with a subscriber’s primary personal residence and used by the people who live there. Its current sharing guidance says a subscription cannot be shared outside that Household except through an arrangement the service permits. The details can vary by country and plan; Disney’s sharing guidance describes the rule.
This is about where the account is used, not simply whether two viewers are related. A relative living at another address is outside the Household for this purpose. Giving that person the primary account password does not turn their home into part of the subscriber’s Household.

What to do if Disney flags a device
A prompt on a television or other device does not necessarily mean the account holder has moved or that a legitimate Household member has lost access permanently. Disney’s paid-sharing explainer describes separate options for temporary travel and a genuine change of residence.
- Temporarily away: Select “I’M AWAY FROM HOME” if it appears, and follow the verification steps. Disney says subscribers and Household members can watch on supported devices while away, but device recognition and regional rules may affect the experience.
- Moved to a new primary residence: Use “UPDATE HOUSEHOLD” when the Household location really needs to change. Do not use it as a way to maintain a permanent second home.
- Still at the primary residence but blocked: Check whether the device is using a different internet connection or whether the account’s Household location is outdated. Review connected devices and account security; contact Disney support if the prompt persists.
Disney does not publish a guaranteed detection threshold or timing for these prompts, so repeated Household changes are not a reliable fix for ongoing use at another residence.

How Extra Member works
Extra Member is Disney’s authorized paid-sharing option for one person outside the Household on an eligible subscription. It is not ordinary password sharing: the invited person receives a separate login, password and profile rather than using the account holder’s main credentials.
- An eligible Disney+ subscription or bundle can have one Extra Member.
- The invited person must be at least 18 years old, live in the same country or region as the account holder, and not already have an active Disney+, Hulu or ESPN subscription.
- The account holder is billed monthly for the add-on.
- The Extra Member can stream and download on one device at a time, receives the same video and audio quality as the account holder, and cannot change the account’s service tier or other account options.
Disney’s U.S. Extra Member guidance lists the eligibility requirements and says some bundles are excluded. The exclusions include Disney+, Hulu and ESPN Unlimited bundles, Disney+, Hulu and Max bundles, and certain other configurations, including plans with NFL+ Premium. Because eligibility is plan-specific and can change, check the account itself rather than assuming a bundle qualifies.

Choose the right option for your situation
| Situation | Practical option |
|---|---|
| The viewer lives in the primary Household | Use the subscription within the Household. |
| A Household member is temporarily traveling | Use Disney’s “I’M AWAY FROM HOME” verification flow if prompted. |
| One adult lives outside the Household, in the same country or region, and the plan is eligible | Check whether Extra Member is available on the account. |
| The plan is ineligible, the viewer already has an active Disney+, Hulu or ESPN subscription, or more than one outside viewer needs access | Compare an eligible plan change with a separate subscription; Extra Member may not fit. |
| The viewer lives in another country or region, or needs independent billing and account control | Consider a separate subscription. |
Check eligibility and cost before changing plans
To check for the add-on, sign in as the account holder, open the account or subscription-management area, and look for Extra Member. If the option appears, follow the invitation flow and enter the other person’s email address. The recipient must accept the invitation and create their own login and password. Menu labels can vary by country, plan and interface version, and third-party billing can change which controls are available. If Extra Member is missing, check plan eligibility and billing arrangements, then contact Disney support rather than trying to work around the restriction.
Disney’s U.S. pricing page, updated April 30, 2026, listed the following monthly plan prices. They are plan prices, not Extra Member prices; the add-on charge should be confirmed in the live account or pricing information for the subscriber’s exact plan.

| U.S. plan listed by Disney | Monthly price on the pricing page updated April 30, 2026 |
|---|---|
| Disney+ With Ads | $6.99 |
| Disney+ Premium | $9.99 |
| Disney+, Hulu | $7.99 |
| Disney+, Hulu Premium | $10.99 |
| Disney+, Hulu and ESPN Select Bundle Basic | $19.99 |
| Disney+, Hulu and ESPN Select Premium | $29.99 |
Disney warns that third-party billing prices may differ and that Extra Member availability depends on the plan. Its September 2024 explainer cited Extra Member prices of $6.99 per month for Disney+ Basic and $9.99 for Disney+ Premium at that time; those historical figures do not establish the current add-on price. Check Disney’s pricing page and the account’s own offer before comparing costs. The better value depends on the number of outside viewers, eligibility, promotions and whether the household uses Hulu or ESPN benefits.
Why sharing the main password is a security risk
Disney services use MyDisney credentials across Disney products and experiences, according to the Disney+ subscriber agreement. Sharing the primary password can therefore expose access beyond one streaming profile. Extra Member supplies separate credentials; a separate subscription gives the viewer independent account control. Avoid reusing or casually distributing the main password.
What the September date means now
September 2024 was the announced period for Disney+’s broader crackdown rollout, not a single global cutoff date. The current decision turns on whether the viewer belongs to the primary Household, is temporarily away, or qualifies for an eligible Extra Member arrangement. For a permanent out-of-household viewer who does not qualify, a separate subscription is the remaining straightforward option.
