Disney+ loses Dolby Vision again in parts of Europe: what subscribers need to know

Disney+’s Dolby Vision loss is a real, regional service restriction tied to InterDigital patent litigation—not usually a faulty TV. Here’s the timeline, affected-market caveat and practical checks.

Yes—Disney+ has genuinely disabled Dolby Vision in some European markets. The change is regional and linked to a patent dispute with InterDigital, not usually to a faulty television or HDMI cable. The situation has changed repeatedly: Dolby Vision returned after an earlier restriction, disappeared again in June 2026, and later restrictions also affected 4K and HDR10 for some customers.

What Disney+ has removed

These are separate technologies, so “HDR” is not one single feature:

Feature What subscribers may see
Dolby Vision A dynamic HDR format using scene- or frame-level metadata. It has disappeared in affected markets.
HDR10 The baseline static HDR format. It was a common fallback after the first Dolby Vision removal, but later restrictions also removed it for some users.
HDR10+ Disney clarified that HDR10+ had not been offered on Disney+ in Europe, so it should not be described as a removed European feature.
4K UHD Resolution up to 3840×2160. Later restrictions temporarily removed 4K for some customers before partial, device-dependent restoration.
3D A separate feature, relevant mainly to Apple Vision Pro playback in Disney’s support documentation.

Disney’s general video-quality documentation lists Dolby Vision, HDR10 and other formats, but says availability depends on the title and device: Disney+ video-quality guidance.

Why the picture quality changed

The visible symptom is Dolby Vision disappearing, but the underlying dispute is not simply a reported failure to pay Dolby Laboratories. InterDigital says the Unified Patent Court’s Mannheim Local Division found Disney infringing a patent covering certain video-encoding techniques related to HEVC and granted an injunction applying across 11 EU countries.

InterDigital also refers to earlier German and Brazilian proceedings involving HDR technology, dynamic overlaying of multiple video streams, and HEVC/AVC compression. The public evidence does not establish that Dolby Vision alone is the technology covered by the June injunction. More accurately, Disney changed its streaming delivery in response to patent litigation involving technology used to encode and deliver video; Dolby Vision was the consumer-facing feature that disappeared.

Read InterDigital’s announcement at its June 16, 2026 release. Patent rights are territorial, which is why an injunction in specified EU jurisdictions does not automatically apply to every country in geographical Europe.

What happened, and when

  1. November 2025: InterDigital announced a German injunction against Disney.
  2. Late January and February 2026: Dolby Vision disappeared for subscribers in some European markets, commonly falling back to HDR10. Early coverage sometimes mentioned HDR10+, although Disney said that format had not been available in Europe.
  3. February 13, 2026: InterDigital announced another Disney-related injunction.
  4. March 2026: Reports said Dolby Vision and 3D had returned in Europe. HDR10+ was not “restored” because Disney said it had not previously been offered there.
  5. June 16, 2026: InterDigital announced the UPC injunction covering 11 EU countries.
  6. June 2026: Dolby Vision and 3D disappeared again in affected markets.
  7. Late July and August 2026: Some countries also lost 4K and HDR10. 4K then began returning on selected devices while HDR availability remained inconsistent.

The repeated removals and restorations mean a February article saying simply that “Dolby Vision is gone” is now incomplete.

Which countries are affected?

The injunction is reported as covering 11 EU countries, but the complete list is not available in the cited public result. Germany was among the earliest clearly reported markets. Consumer and specialist reports also identified France, Belgium, Portugal, Poland, Italy and other countries at different stages.

That does not justify saying all of Europe has lost Dolby Vision. The United Kingdom and United States were reported as unaffected by the June Dolby Vision restriction, although later availability can still vary by device, market and date. A definitive 11-country table should come from the UPC judgment or a country-specific Disney notice rather than inferred user reports.

How to tell whether your setup is affected

What you observe Most likely explanation
Dolby Vision badges disappear across many previously compatible titles, while HDR10 remains A regional or service-side Dolby Vision restriction.
4K remains but HDR disappears A later restriction or a device-specific restoration.
Both 4K and HDR disappear A more extensive market restriction, or a local device problem.
Only one title fails Title metadata, compatibility or catalog-version issue is more likely.
Dolby Vision still works from another service on the same television The television hardware is unlikely to be the root cause.

Controlled check

  1. Choose a title that previously displayed a Dolby Vision badge.
  2. Confirm the television or player supports Dolby Vision and is connected directly, or through a compatible AV receiver.
  3. Open the television’s signal-information overlay, if available, to distinguish Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR or SDR.
  4. Try the same title on another supported Disney+ device.
  5. Update the Disney+ app, television firmware and streaming-device software, then restart them.
  6. Check HDMI cables, receiver pass-through and the television’s enhanced HDMI mode.
  7. Confirm the Premium plan is active and Disney+ is set to its highest available data-usage setting. Disney explains automatic quality selection and data controls at its data-usage help page.

A low-data setting can reduce quality, but no local setting can restore a format Disney is withholding in a country.

Is Premium supposed to include Dolby Vision?

Premium is the Disney+ tier advertised with up to 4K UHD and HDR, four simultaneous streams and Dolby Atmos. Disney’s plan documentation qualifies quality by device, title, plan and availability: Disney+ plans and prices.

That creates an important distinction:

  • Plan entitlement: Premium is the tier associated with the highest advertised video quality.
  • Technical delivery: The actual stream depends on country, title, device and current service configuration.
  • Legal restriction: A court order can prevent delivery of a feature even while the subscription tier remains unchanged.

Whether a subscriber is owed a refund or price reduction depends on the applicable consumer law and contract; the available evidence does not establish an automatic refund right.

Is it a TV, app or HDMI fault?

It may be local if only one device or title is affected. It is much more likely to be a Disney+ regional change when several Dolby Vision titles lose their badges, another service still plays Dolby Vision on the same television, or multiple household devices show the same result.

Dolby Vision support in Netflix, Prime Video or Apple TV+ does not guarantee that Disney+ will deliver it. A television may display a generic “HDR” label without identifying HDR10 or Dolby Vision. Resolution, HDR and audio are separate: 4K can return while HDR remains absent, and losing Dolby Vision does not necessarily remove Dolby Atmos.

What will and will not help

Worth trying

  • App and firmware updates, restarts and a second known-compatible title.
  • Checking account, device and connection region settings are consistent.
  • Asking Disney support specifically about Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR and 4K for your country and device.

Unlikely to fix a service restriction

  • Buying a new Dolby Vision television.
  • Replacing an HDMI cable when the same display works with another service.
  • Changing picture modes or moving from a smart-TV app to another box solely to bypass the restriction.
  • Using a VPN. It can breach Disney+ terms and create account or playback problems rather than provide a responsible solution.

Downloads can behave differently from streaming: TechRadar reported that one later restriction left downloads unaffected, but that detail is restriction-specific and can change. See TechRadar’s report.

Options for affected viewers

  • Keep Premium: Sensible if you value Disney’s catalog, downloads, four streams, Atmos or the possibility that quality returns. UK documentation listed £14.99 monthly or £149.90 annually on May 4, 2026; prices vary by market and change.
  • Downgrade or pause: A cost-saving choice if Dolby Vision and 4K are your main reasons for Premium. Check billing terms, promotions and price locks first.
  • Use physical media: 4K UHD Blu-ray provides dependable high-bitrate playback and, where supported by the disc and player, Dolby Vision without Disney’s streaming backend. It costs more upfront and requires storage.
  • Add another service: Netflix, Prime Video, Apple TV+ or Max may offer Dolby Vision on selected titles, plans and devices, but none substitutes for Disney’s catalog and availability is country-specific.

What happens next?

There is no announced restoration date. Dolby Vision or other features could return through a settlement, licensing arrangement, appeal, or a redesign of Disney’s delivery technology. Because Disney has already restored and removed features multiple times, the current limitation should be treated as changeable rather than permanent.
