Some examples are confirmed in a story or by its creators; others are audience interpretations reported as speculation. Keeping those categories separate matters: a fan reading is not canon, and a brief scene is not the same as a lead character’s sustained storyline.
What “confirmed” means in this list
A character belongs in the confirmed category when their identity or relationship is conveyed in the work, described officially, or stated by an attributable creator or cast member. Those kinds of evidence are related, but not identical: an on-screen exchange is different from commentary in an interview. Speculation means audiences have interpreted a character as queer without the sources cited here establishing that interpretation as canon.
These examples come from Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars productions, which do not all share one fictional continuity. They also vary in prominence, from a lead character’s characterization to a short or background appearance.
Confirmed portrayals and statements
| Character or portrayal | What is established | Evidence and prominence |
|---|---|---|
| Ethan Clade (Strange World, Disney Animation) | Voice actor Jaboukie Young-White described Ethan’s sexuality as part of his characterization, rather than the focus of a coming-out or acceptance plot. | In a December 2, 2022 interview with Disney News, Young-White said: “It’s not a story about him coming out. It’s not a story about him trying to find acceptance for his sexuality. It’s just Ethan coming into himself wholly, fully, and in an environment that is ready to support him.” This is attributed cast commentary about a lead character. |
| Loki (Loki, Marvel Cinematic Universe) | The series makes Loki’s bisexuality canon in a conversation with Sylvie. | TIME reported on the third episode’s revelation. This is an on-screen series development, not a fan interpretation. |
| Orka and Flix (Star Wars Resistance) | Disney producers confirmed that the characters are a couple. | The Guardian reported the confirmation in 2019. The confirmation establishes their relationship; it does not by itself establish how much screen time the couple receives. |
| Three characters in The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder | Disney corporate coverage says the series introduces three LGBTQ characters, including a nonconforming trendsetter and a married couple with children. | The cited coverage does not name all three characters, so this evidence supports the series-level description, not a complete named-character list. |
| A man in Avengers: Endgame | A man discussing dates with men appears in the film. | Out’s historical timeline describes the brief scene. It establishes what the scene depicts, not a more specific identity for the character. |
| Hawthorne and her female partner (Lightyear, Pixar) | The film depicts Hawthorne with a female partner. | Out’s historical timeline includes the relationship. The portrayal is brief rather than a sustained lead romance. |
| Aneka and Ayo (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Marvel) | Out’s historical timeline identifies the two characters as an example of queer representation in the film. | This is a specific film portrayal, but the cited timeline does not establish a more detailed identity label here. |
Characters reported as speculation
A February 26, 2020 Miami Herald report described audience speculation that the following characters might be LGBTQ. That reporting establishes that the interpretations circulated; it does not confirm the characters’ identities.

|---|---|---|

That article is a dated account of speculation, not a definitive statement about what later creators or the shows may have said. The characters should therefore remain labeled as speculation on the basis of that source.
Why a “20 characters” count needs qualification
The examples above do not establish a verified roster of exactly 20. Some sources describe a group without naming every member; others document a brief scene rather than giving a character an explicit identity label. Counting such cases alongside named, developed characters can obscure the difference between kinds of evidence and levels of representation.
For a useful list, each entry needs its own support: what the work depicts, what an official or attributable source confirms, and whether the evidence is on-screen or external commentary. Without that distinction, a headline count can make speculation look like canon.

Disney+’s official Pride collection description highlights LGBTQIA+ stories and names Out and High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. The collection description is a discovery aid, not a complete character roster, and what is available to watch can vary by territory and over time.
